Percy Jackson Multiverse Possibility Addressed by Author Rick Riordan

As a movie buff with over three decades of cinematic exploration under my belt, I find myself standing at the crossroads of anticipation and apprehension regarding the potential multiverse adventure for Percy Jackson and the Olympians. While the multiverse trend has certainly been a box office juggernaut, its omnipresence in recent years leaves me yearning for fresh perspectives rather than retreading familiar paths.

For over five years now, the multiverse concept has been ruling the roost in Hollywood, with blockbusters like “Everything Everywhere All At Once” and MCU movies such as “Deadpool & Wolverine” being some of its most prominent examples. Now, it’s being whispered that the beloved television series “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” might be the next Disney+ project to delve into this multiverse realm. These rumors have finally been acknowledged by the author and executive producer himself, Rick Riordan.

In a chat last week, Riordan hinted at the upcoming second season of the Disney+ series, though no definite launch date has been set yet. During this conversation, he also touched upon the possibility of blending both properties into a multiverse scenario for the future. However, he expressed strong reservations about this idea. Despite the rising trend of multiverses, Riordan wishes to safeguard the original Percy Jackson films from impacting the newer Disney+ series.

Riordan stated, “I don’t want anything to eclipse the fresh new cast and steal their spotlight.” He emphasized that this is their time to shine, and we should let them fully embody these characters without being overshadowed by past events. Interestingly, he mentioned that while the MCU is currently leading the multiverse trend, they didn’t introduce the concept of the multiverse until a decade after the first Marvel film was released.

It seems unlikely for that event to occur anytime soon, given that Marvel only explored the multiverse concept after a considerable number of their films.

A Percy Jackson Multiverse Might Hurt More Than It Helps

The widespread success and hype surrounding multiverse narratives has been significant, but there are signs that their reign in Hollywood might be waning. With an abundance of films and TV series exploring the multiverse – such as almost every Marvel movie from recent years – the novelty and thrill associated with these stories seems to be fading. If Disney were to adopt a similar approach for its Percy Jackson and the Olympians franchise, introducing multiple universes, viewers might perceive it as a repetitive cash grab rather than an opportunity to present unique, groundbreaking ideas.

Instead of trying to reintegrate the original films into the Percy Jackson universe on Disney+, it would be more beneficial to learn from the past mistakes and focus on creating better content. The actors from the previous Percy Jackson movies have shown appreciation for their television counterparts’ performances, and this collaboration seems to be enough for fans.
