As a history enthusiast who has had the privilege of witnessing some remarkable artifacts and discoveries, I must say that Luke Auld-Thomas’ find in Campeche, Mexico is truly awe-inspiring! It’s not every day that one gets to contribute to rewriting the pages of human history. The sheer size of Valeriana, with its sprawling network of buildings and impressive structures, paints a captivating picture of life during the Mayan era.
In ordinary language: Luke Auld-Thomas, a PhD student from Tulane University, doesn’t usually come across undiscovered ruins of ancient civilizations. However, his fascination with laser mapping technology called Lidar allowed him to uncover an entire complex of hidden buildings that had lain buried beneath the jungle in Mexico’s Campeche for centuries.
In all, three sites were uncovered, collectively spanning the area of Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city during that period. These sites are thought to have housed approximately 50,000 people between 750 and 850 AD. Researchers have christened this ancient city Valeriana, inspired by a nearby lagoon. This discovery challenges the prevailing academic viewpoint that civilizations in the Tropics were doomed to decline, as stated by Professor Marcello Canuto.
In simpler terms, Auld-Thomas pointed out that the world of olden times was filled with diverse city structures, unlike the ones we know today. Some cities were vast agricultural landscapes interspersed with settlements, while others were densely populated. Furthermore, some cities had a strong emphasis on equality, whereas others had significant inequality. With modern issues like rapid population growth and its associated environmental and social challenges, studying ancient cities can broaden our perspective on what urban life could be.
As someone captivated by the enigmatic allure of Valeriana, I can’t help but marvel at its untouched history. Few, if any, have dared to penetrate its thick foliage in days gone by. However, recent scans reveal a stunning revelation: this secluded haven was once the scale of a grand Maya capital, boasting numerous plazas, temples, a reservoir, and even a ball court!
