“Protect Your Rights” Chair is a Commentary on Copying

Swedish furniture brand Blå Station, collaborating with David Ericsson, have produced a striking wooden chair that aims to convey a message on the topic of counterfeit and imitation designs.

During this year’s Stockholm Design Festival, a chair called “Defend Your Freedoms” (D.Y.F) was unveiled, and Ericsson refers to it as an ode to minimalism.

The P.Y.R brand asserts that it stands for more than just an item; it’s a manifestation of ideas. It serves as a testament to the power of simplicity, but also poses a question: In an era where duplication or ‘strong inspiration’ is commonplace, how can we preserve authenticity?

Although it’s clearly identifiable as a chair, the intricacies of its design remain unclear – possibly due to intentional ambiguity related to the overall concept. However, what is certain is that it’s made from robust pine plywood and presents a solid build. A metal plaque adorns the back of the backrest, bearing both the chair’s name and a succinct explanation of the philosophy behind its creation.

We educate engineers, technicians, and designers to create advanced, intelligent, and eco-friendly products. However, we often find ourselves powerless spectators as these innovations are rapidly modified, degraded, and marketed back to us at cheaper prices, fostering a never-ending race towards self-destruction.

For both Ericsson and the brand, designing a seemingly straightforward chair provided an opportunity to consider the extensive workflow typically overlooked in producing the final item.

People often only witness the final product of a lengthy and expensive design and development process. However, it’s essential to understand that behind the scenes, this process necessitates immense patience and an extensive body of knowledge.

The P.Y.R brand debuted during the Stockholm Furniture Fair, held in the beautiful Swedish city between February 3rd and 7th.
