As a long-time fan who grew up grooving to Queen Latifah‘s powerful voice and captivating performances, this news about her biopic has me beyond excited! From her iconic rap hits like “U.N.I.T.Y.” to her unforgettable roles in movies like Chicago and Girls Trip, she has been an undeniable force in the entertainment industry.
A biopic focusing on the life of Queen Latifah is being developed; it will be the initial installation in a series of self-funded hip-hop biographies, which are being produced by Flavor Unit Entertainment, Westbrook Studios, and Jesse Collins Entertainment.
This movie is going to chronicle the rise of Latifah from a performer into a renowned rapper, singer, and actress who has earned Emmy, Grammy, and Golden Globe awards. HarbourView Equity Partners are also funding this film, along with other upcoming biopics focusing on legendary hip-hop artists.
It has not yet been announced who will be writing or directing the Latifah project.
For the movie’s production, we have Latifah and Shakim Compere from Flavor Unit Entertainment, Will Smith and Miguel Melendez from Westbrook Studios, as well as Jesse Collins and Dionne Harmon of Jesse Collins Entertainment. The latter duo is known for their work on the miniseries The New Edition Story and The Bobby Brown Story, which were previously aired on BET.
Latifah and Compere stated, ‘We entered this field as a team, and Hip Hop has left an indelible mark on each of us. Beyond music, Hip Hop has significantly influenced culture and society at large.’ They expressed their joy about the opportunity to work with friends and peers who not only share their experiences but can also bring to life the stories that were a big part of our personal histories.
As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but express my excitement about uniting our creative forces with Flavor Unit, Jesse Collins Entertainment, and HarbourView. Together, we’re on a mission to shine a spotlight on the captivating narratives of some of our cherished artists and role models. And what a fitting tale to kick things off than that of Queen Latifah, an uncontested icon who has been both our entertainment and inspiration for decades!
1989 saw Latifah unveil her first studio album at the tender age of 19, which has since made her famous for hits like “U.N.I.T.Y.”, a Grammy-winning single from 1993. Beyond music, she’s garnered attention in Hollywood, starring in shows such as “Living Single” and “The Equalizer”, and films including “Chicago”, “Beauty Shop”, and “Girls Trip”.
The popularity of biographical films about musicians has been on fire after the recent triumph of movies like Paramount’s “Bob Marley: One Love“. This Christmas, Timothée Chalamet’s portrayal of Bob Dylan will hit theaters courtesy of Searchlight Pictures. Meanwhile, Lionsgate is planning to unveil a feature film centered around Michael Jackson in the coming year.
Deadline was first to report about the Latifah film.
