As a gamer who grew up in the late 90s, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia watching the trailer for Y2K. The sight of iconic devices like the Tamagotchi and Nokia phones evoke memories of sleepovers spent playing games and trying to keep those pesky virtual pets alive. However, the chaotic turn of events in this movie seems a tad extreme, even for someone who’s survived countless boss battles and apocalyptic video game scenarios!
In the preview for the A24 film “Y2K”, Rachel Zegler doesn’t seem to be up for a 90s-style party.
On December 6th, a movie directed by Saturday Night Live’s notable figure Kyle Mooney will be released in theaters. The story revolves around two high school juniors who must survive after their unfortunate crash at a New Year’s Eve party on the last night of 1999. Alongside them in the cast are Jaeden Martell, Julian Dennison, The Kid Laroi, Fred Durst, Mason Gooding, Alicia Silverstone, and Kyle Mooney himself.
As a fan, I’m excitedly sharing that the trailer unveils a wild party turning into a nightmare when various gadgets from the late 20th century – some of which were once cherished items – seem to be on a rampage against humanity. In one chilling scene, a character yells out in shock, “A Tamagotchi has pierced a woman’s skull!”
Later on in the video, Martell finds a positive aspect while talking to Zegler: “Tonight has been the most miserable night I’ve ever had. However, it’s great that we finally got a chance to spend time together.”
As the gamer in me, I step up as the director for my first full-length movie, a project I co-wrote with Evan Winter. This masterpiece is being produced by the talented team consisting of Evan, Matt Dines, Alison Goodwin, Jonah Hill, Christopher Storer, and Cooper Wehde. The script we penned together for this groundbreaking film is inspired by none other than Mooney, co-writer of Brigsby Bear.
Back at South by Southwest in March, I had the pleasure of watching “Y2K” premiere. In her critique for The Hollywood Reporter, Lovia Gyarkye remarked, “This film showcases confident performances, particularly from Julian Dennison, and offers several sharp twists that seem to be searching for a more compelling narrative.”
More recently, Zegler appeared in the movie “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” from last year. Her future roles include providing voiceover work for the Netflix animated film “Spellbound” and taking on the lead character in Disney’s live-action adaptation of “Snow White”.
