Rambo Creator Wanted Kris Kristofferson as the Iconic Action Hero

As a movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours delving into the rich tapestry of cinematic history, I cannot help but be captivated by the revelation that Kris Kristofferson was David Morrell’s original vision for the iconic character of John Rambo.

David Morrell, the creator of the 1972 novel “First Blood” that eventually inspired Sylvester Stallone’s famous franchise, originally conceived a different actor for the lead role. On Twitter, Morrell disclosed that he had long imagined country music legend and “A Star is Born” and “Blade” actor as John Rambo, the tormented Vietnam War veteran who clashes with a small-town law enforcement agency.

Renowned for hits such as “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down,” “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Help Me Make It Through The Night,” and others, along with memorable on-screen performances in films like A Star is Born, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Flashpoint, and the Blade franchise, the iconic singer-actor, Kristofferson, passed away on September 28 at the age of 88. Morrell expressed his tribute to the late artist on social media, sharing that he had often envisioned him as Rambo.

Feeling deeply saddened by the passing of Kris Kristofferson, one of my beloved songwriters. Not only a gifted musician but also an impressive actor. When I sold the film rights for FIRST BLOOD back in 1972, I always envisioned him as Rambo, with his distinctive beard and long hair, as he was described in my book.

Kris Kristofferson Would Have Made a Captivating Rambo

Kris Kristofferson died tranquilly with his loved ones present, issuing a message through a statement at that moment which conveyed:

With deep sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Kris Kristofferson, on September 28th at home. We feel truly fortunate for the time spent with him. Many thanks for your love over the years; when you see a rainbow, remember it’s his smile shining down on us.

If Kris Kristofferson had played the main character instead of Sylvester Stallone in the Rambo series, it’s not hard to envision a scenario where he squares off against Brian Dennehy’s Sheriff and his group of cops. This law enforcement team would soon find themselves struggling when they wrongfully apprehend John Rambo. With Kristofferson’s rough and weathered demeanor, along with his long beard and hair, he could have created a compelling action hero if Morrell’s concept had come to fruition.

As a seasoned movie critic, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing some memorable cinematic moments, and Rambo, portrayed masterfully by Sylvester Stallone, is undeniably one such moment. Over the years, Stallone has breathed life into this action icon across various sequels that span decades. The last time we caught a glimpse of our hero was in the 2019 film Rambo: Last Blood, a production that faced criticism from critics. Initially, it seemed like we had seen the last of Rambo on the big screen, but Stallone has since hinted at work on a prequel TV series.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m confident it’s on the horizon. My vision was to craft it like a Ken Burns documentary on Vietnam, introducing young Rambo, a charismatic figure, football captain, and then unfolding the events that transform him into Rambo we all know. However, they’re opting for a contemporary tale, one where I hand over the mantle. We’re edging closer to that point.
