Ranbir Kapoor-led Animal's story 'never connected' with Ram Gopal Varma; director says 'his love for his father is the last thing...'

As a seasoned filmmaker with decades of experience under my belt, I have learned to appreciate diverse storytelling and unique cinematic approaches. Sandeep Reddy Vanga and Ranbir Kapoor’s “Animal” was undeniably a box office phenomenon last year, breaking records left and right. However, in my humble opinion, the movie didn’t quite resonate with me on an emotional level, which is something I always look for in a film.

Last year, I was utterly captivated by Sandeep Reddy Vanga and Ranbir Kapoor’s masterpiece, Animal. This action-thriller shattered numerous box office records, garnering both love and criticism in equal measures. Despite the mixed reviews, it proved to be a blockbuster hit commercially. However, in a recent chat with filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, I was surprised to learn that he didn’t resonate with Animal’s narrative.

Ram Gopal Varma and Sandeep Reddy Vanga recently shared insights from their successful cinematic journeys at a gathering, attracting a large crowd. In the course of their conversation, RGV unveiled aspects that resonated and fell short for him in Ranbir Kapoor’s movie, Animal. The director of Sarkar 3 expressed his affection for the film from the moment the lead actor appeared with a machine gun.

Afterward, he wasn’t concerned about the rest of the movie’s events. It was that specific moment that resonated with him and made him appreciate the character. In a similar vein, Animal’s story didn’t strike a chord with him either. What touched him most was the affection the son had for his father. He admitted this, explaining that he always seeks out the most impactful moments in films, which, in his opinion, is what truly drives cinema.

As a seasoned lifestyle expert, I find myself often revisiting the gripping action-thriller by Sandeep Reddy Vanga. However, when I rewatch this masterpiece, I tend to swiftly skip over the scenes focusing on the father and son relationship. Now, I’m not discounting the emotional impact that these scenes may have had in the overall narrative – perhaps they were intended to boost the film’s emotional quotient. Yet, from my perspective as a fellow creator, I feel that these scenes didn’t quite resonate as effectively as some others might have.

In a recent discussion, RGV (the director) shared that the only time over the past 20 years he stood up and applauded in a movie theater was when he witnessed an intense gun scene. He went on to explain, as an expert in his field, that if it had been a hockey stick instead of a machine gun, the scene wouldn’t have elicited such a strong response from him.

Following the success of Sandeep’s film surpassing the 900-crore rupee mark, RGV joined in the grand celebration. Shortly afterwards, he shared a picture with Vanga, implying that no other project could be greater than ‘Animal’, comparing it to an ‘Animal Park’.
