As a theater enthusiast with a soft spot for stories that resonate deeply with real-life experiences, I can hardly contain my excitement for “Real Women Have Curves: The Musical” gracing the James Earl Jones Theatre this spring! Having grown up in a community much like Ana García’s, I can relate to the struggles of balancing dreams and expectations.
This spring, a musical interpretation of “Real Women Have Curves” will take center stage at the James Earl Jones Theatre.
The Sergio Trujillo-directed and choreographed musical (“Ain’t Too Proud”) is set to start previews on April 1st, leading up to its opening night on April 27th, which marks the final day for Tony Awards eligibility this season. At present, the casting for this production, produced by Barry and Fran Weissler (known for “Chicago” and “Waitress”) along with Jack Noseworthy, has not been disclosed yet.
The stage musical ‘Real Women Have Curves: The Musical’ is adapted from Josefina López’s original play, which first premiered in San Francisco in 1990 and has since been performed numerous times. It also shares ties with HBO’s ‘Real Women Have Curves’, written by Josefina López and George LaVoo, featuring America Ferrera. This production is set to make its Broadway debut following a world premiere at the American Repertory Theater in 2023.
This production boasts music and lyrics by Joy Huerta, from the pop duo Jesse & Joy, as well as Benjamin Velez, known for “Kiss My Aztec”. The musical direction is handled by Nadia DiGiallonardo. The script is penned by Lisa Loomer, author of “The Waiting Room”, and Nell Benjamin, creator of “Mean Girls”.
The story unfolds against the backdrop of Los Angeles during the summer of ’87. It revolves around 18-year-old Ana García, who harbors ambitions of attending college and pursuing a career in New York City. However, her mother’s expectations for Ana are that she should continue living at home and work in the family’s garment factory.
The performance of “Left on Tenth,” a play written by Delia Ephron and featuring Julianna Margules and Peter Gallagher, concludes at the James Earl Jones Theatre on February 2. It had its Broadway debut on October 23.
