As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours navigating through the intricate world of Netflix shows, I can confidently say that my excitement for the return of Squid Game is as intense as Gi-hun’s obsession with gambling. I’ve rewatched the first season more times than I care to admit, and yet, I find myself eagerly anticipating the second installment.

[This story contains spoilers from Squid Game season one.]

Three years following its explosive debut on Netflix and claiming the title of streamer’s most successful series ever, “Squid Game” is back on December 26 with its long-anticipated second season. Created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, this thrilling sequel delves further into the brutal past of the titular contest, as Lee Jung-jae reprises his role as Seong Gi-hun, risking life and limb once more in the games.

Before starting with “Squid Game 2”, you might be curious if you need to recap every minor detail from the original. However, the response isn’t straightforward. While it’s not necessary to remember every character and scene, certain recurring characters and plotlines are significant and beneficial to refresh before pressing play. If a full rewatch isn’t feasible for you, here’s a concise summary of key points to keep in mind before diving into “Squid Game 2” (trailer below).

Set and produced in South Korea, the series “Squid Game” follows Gi-hun, a struggling gambler and absent father with a soft spot for his child. He frequently gambles and collaborates on schemes with his friend Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan), who will reappear in the upcoming season. In the first season, however, it’s Gi-hun’s character that takes center stage as he finds himself in a mysterious predicament when he accepts an offer from an intriguing salesman (Gong Yoo) to make substantial sums of money by participating in the Squid Game. This decision ultimately leads him to abandon his previous life, with both the salesman and Gi-hun set to return in the upcoming season.

Following a slumber in a gas-filled limo journey, Gi-hun stirs to find himself dressed in a green jumpsuit, housed in a colossal dormitory hall alongside numerous others, all attired similarly. They’re here to compete for an enormous sum of money, having signed up without fully grasping the game’s rules. As they swiftly comprehend the rules, a large number of contestants perish during the initial Red Light Green Light contest, a sequence that becomes instantly memorable. The majority of survivors opt to quit the Game and leave. However, within a week, those same survivors decide to return, preferring their chances in a series of deadly battles over their chances of surviving at home.

The competition continues, with Gi-hun at the center, surrounded by his fellow players, some friends, others foes. Their gazes are directed towards a mysterious figure wearing a mask, known as the Front Man, portrayed by Lee Byung-hun. Unbeknownst to the Front Man, a police officer named Jun-ho (Wi Ha-Joon) secretly joined the game, on a mission to locate his missing brother. The Front Man and Jun-ho had a brief, tense encounter in season one, resulting in Jun-ho being shot and believed dead, but surprisingly, he survived and is no longer involved.

In the upcoming season, both the Lead Character and Jun-ho are set to appear, but many other characters from last season may not return significantly, given that every one of Gi-hun’s associates met a tragic end at the conclusion of the first season. As the lone victor of the game, Gi-hun amassed an unspendable fortune during his time in the contest. However, the price for this windfall is steep, as one year following his triumph, Gi-hun is on a quest to identify Oh Il-nam (Oh Yeong-su), the creator of the game and a terminally ill individual who had posed as an ally to Gi-hun during their time in the contest.

With “Player 001” no longer alive, Gi-hun is left without any solid clues on how to halt the game. In a move that anyone might make in his situation, he decides to dye his hair bright pink and sets off for the United States, where his daughter now resides. However, just as he’s about to board the plane, Gi-hun receives a call from the Front Man, which stirs the desire for retribution within him. The season concludes with Gi-hun reversing course, swearing revenge – and this is precisely where our story picks up when Squid Game 2 premieres on Dec. 26.

Lee recently hinted that Gi-hun, in the upcoming season of Squid Game which has been nominated for a Golden Globe, will appear significantly altered. His perspective on his surroundings and interactions with the world will be remarkably different, making him seem almost like a new individual. Driven by ambition above all else, Gi-hun is determined to bring an end to this game with unwavering resolve.

The conflict between Lee’s Player 456 and the Front Man is set to persist right up until the end of the series, as confirmed by the announcement of its third season scheduled for release in 2025.
