Martyn Ford has burst onto the scene much like the Kool-Aid Man breaking through a wall, going from sharing workout routines on social media to landing roles in blockbuster films (such as the ninth Fast & Furious movie and Mortal Kombat 2, upcoming, as well as streaming series like The Sandman and Those About to Die). He’s currently starring as the legendary giant Goliath in Prime Video’s new series House of David, and will also take on a powerful villain role in the upcoming Red Sonja remake. In an interview with MovieWeb, Ford hinted that his character, General Karlak, in this movie would be visually stunning, suggesting a combination of Ford’s already imposing physique and some impressive CGI effects.
Ford has shown exceptional talent in creating complex yet chilling villains, and he likens the character Karlak from Red Sonja to Goliath, a figure from ancient tales. “I believe there’s often a resemblance between the ultimate antagonists in their behavior and their aura. Essentially, the only thing that varies is the method behind their actions,” Ford stated, further elaborating:
In a nutshell, my character in Red Sonja is an extraordinary spectacle to behold. I can’t reveal too many details about it just yet, but I’m excited for its release because I want to see it as much as you do. We filmed it some time ago, and the experience was truly exceptional. Fingers crossed, it should be out in the next couple of months. As for the villains I’ve portrayed, they all embody a certain swagger that’s distinctly mine, and I hope my character in Red Sonja carries that same air of arrogance and grandeur.
The ‘Red Sonja’ Remake Is Finally Being Released
The reboot of the character “Red Sonja” has had a rocky journey to reach the big screen. As far back as 2008, Robert Rodriguez (known for “El Mariachi” and “Sin City”) was developing a version featuring Rose McGowan. Later, Simon West (“Con Air,” “The Expendables 2”) intended to work on the film, but that didn’t come to fruition. A new script penned by Christopher Cosmos then emerged, with Bryan Singer being confirmed as director. However, when sexual misconduct allegations against Singer arose in 2019, both he and the project were terminated. Subsequently, Joey Soloway (“Transparent”) was slated to write, direct, and produce the film, which promised an intriguing outcome.
The initial script for Red Sonja, penned by Soloway and Tasha Huo, didn’t turn out as planned. Later, M.J. Bassett (known for Deathwatch and Rogue) took over and rewrote the script. Given her impressive work on Solomon Kane, another sword-and-sorcery film, she seemed like a suitable choice. Filming for Red Sonja started in November 2022 and wrapped up in early 2023. However, instead of releasing it in 2024 as initially planned, it was announced on February 17, 2025, that Red Sonja would premiere in the UK towards the end of 2025 through Signature Entertainment. In the interim, you can stream House of David on Prime Video.
