It’s no longer surprising that the talented Norwegian actress Renate Reinsve is becoming more familiar to North American viewers, given her appearances in popular recent projects like “Presumed Innocent” on Apple TV+ and “A Different Man” in cinemas. Her rise to fame can be traced back to the internationally successful film “The Worst Person in the World“, which won her the Best Actress award at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. Her latest Norwegian film has recently won the Camera d’Or at Cannes and is now screening in U.S. theaters. In the new movie “Armand” directed by Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel, Reinsve delivers another captivating performance, possibly her best yet. Catch her stealing the spotlight as a worried mom who spends a day at her son’s school after an incident at recess causes unease among some parents and faculty.
MovieWeb recently had a chat with director Tøndel who shared insights about his long-standing partnership with Reinsve. This duo worked together on an unpublished short film eight years ago, and they’re now teaming up again for the release of “Armand” in U.S. cinemas this week. But that’s not all! Tøndel revealed to us that he has already begun writing a new project with Renate in mind. “The character I am creating is quite intense,” he said, adding that it’s an incredibly exciting opportunity, especially since he now knows Reinsve even better. He went on to say that having her in mind while writing brings many subtle details and layers to the story.
Tøndel shared more about his future Renate role:
This character demonstrates an extraordinary versatility that I rarely witness on screen. She can transition swiftly from being extraordinarily calm and tender to fiercely intense, sometimes within a single moment. Moreover, she possesses an array of captivating qualities that span the full spectrum, making her a fascinating character to write for.
Falling “Madly Creatively in Love” with Renate Reinsve
Additionally, Tøndel opened up to us further about their collaborative chemistry in creative projects with Reinsve, and explained how her connection with Armand was instrumental in securing the necessary financing for the production of the movie.
In Norway, securing state funding for projects is highly competitive. Since I’d already produced a few short films, I found myself well-positioned in the running. Moreover, including Renate in our projects undoubtedly bolstered our application, especially considering her subsequent success with The Worst Person in the World. In essence, she provided unwavering moral support during the entire funding process.
In addition to being an executive producer on the movie, her strong faith in the project since its inception has been incredibly beneficial for me as a writer, explained Tøndel. Over almost a decade of working together, Reinsve and Tøndel might soon re-release the initial short film that initiated their partnership, which eventually spawned Armand.
We’ve been contemplating a release for its 10-year anniversary… Creating this project was an incredible experience, despite only taking two days. There was an intense creative connection, and as I wrote Armand, I had Elisabeth in my mind.
