If you’re a cinema enthusiast, it’s likely that you recognize the name Ridley Scott; even if you’re not, you might still be familiar with his most renowned films. Over the past four decades, this director has been behind some of the industry’s biggest productions, such as ‘Alien’, ‘Gladiator’, and indeed ‘Gladiator II’. Notably, Peter Craig, a screenwriter for ‘Gladiator II’, transitioned to television for the development of ‘Dope Thief’, an adaptation of a novel. Interestingly, Ridley Scott chose to accompany him on this TV project.
The 2025 TV lineup is bursting with fresh programs, yet Dope Thief wasn’t one I thought I’d grow fond of – quite a surprise! Before its debut, I had an opportunity to chat with Craig. When I learned that Ridley Scott helmed the initial episode, it was only natural to inquire about the circumstances. Craig openly admitted that it was perfect timing, given their previous project’s collapse.
Recently, we encountered a highly advantageous situation with our long-planned film project about a war photographer. Just as everything seemed to be falling into place, with an excellent cast that I’d rather not name for professional reasons, Ridley and I were thrilled about it. We had been meticulously refining the script, and then, unfortunately, it was one of those instances where funding suddenly disappeared at the last possible moment. As a result, the movie failed to materialize.
As a film enthusiast, I’d put it this way: I noticed that our renowned director has a deep passion for his craft. When inviting him for the debut episode, it wasn’t a grand romance or an elaborate attempt to win him over. It was just a casual chat, like two friends discussing their shared love for cinema.
Ridley adores his job. His face lights up whenever he’s working, and as soon as I showed him that pilot, he said, “Let’s see if you think I’ll like this.” Turns out, he did! He grasped the show’s dark humor instantly. In fact, Ridley often yearns for more opportunities to delve into dark comedy. And so, without any formalities or preamble, we jumped right in and started working on it together.
In their first joint venture for television, Scott and Craig gave it their absolute best, resulting in an exceptionally thrilling and exhilarating premiere episode – a level of excitement I haven’t experienced in a while. To my mind, “Dope Thief” could easily earn a spot among the top Apple TV+ shows.
Craig has a history of writing hit films in Hollywood, not just because of his stories. He co-wrote the screenplays for the last two parts of The Hunger Games series, Mockingjay, and one of the best live-action Batman movies, The Batman, with director Matt Reeves. Craig also wrote the story for Top Gun: Maverick, a movie that was well-received, and now fans are eagerly awaiting Top Gun 3.
It’s no wonder his television debut would turn out fantastic, given the talented cast and crew supporting him. The stellar lineup of “Dope Thief” features Brian Tyree Henry (“Atlanta”), Wagner Moura (“Civil War”), Kate Mulgrew (the “Orange is the New Black” cast), among others. With just eight episodes, I’m confident it will deliver a compact, thrilling series that viewers are eagerly anticipating – based on my experience of watching all eight episodes.
The show titled “Dope Thief” will make its debut by airing the initial two episodes on March 14th. To watch these episodes, you’ll need a subscription to Apple TV+.
