Road House 2 Is Coming Despite Big Complaints About The Movie’s Streaming Release. Will The Director Return?

As a seasoned gamer who’s seen more movies than I can count pixels in my favorite video games, I must say I’m intrigued by the latest developments surrounding the sequel to Road House. I was a big fan of the original and Jake Gyllenhaal did an excellent job breathing new life into that iconic character.

Enthusiasts of the remade version of “Road House” can rejoice, as it has been confirmed by a popular streaming platform, Amazon Prime Video, that a sequel titled “Road House 2” is indeed in the works. This announcement was made despite initial criticism from director Doug Liman about the film bypassing theaters. Jake Gyllenhaal will once again play his character, rekindling the charm that drew viewers to the original. The main question now revolves around whether Liman, who gave the classic a fresh spin, will be back to direct the sequel. However, following recent comments from Liman criticizing the streaming service for allegedly not compensating the film’s team post-release, his involvement in the follow-up remains uncertain.

As a gamer, I can’t help but feel a bit anxious about whether Doug Liman will be back to direct the sequel of the UFC-focused movie we all loved. In an exclusive chat with Entertainment Weekly, he admitted that he’s never tackled a sequel before, yet he’s incredibly proud of the character Jake Gyllenhaal and I brought to life together. This partnership helped Jake break free from his typical dramatic roles and unveil a more marketable side, making him an ideal choice for this fresh take on a property that first emerged in 1989 with Patrick Swayze. Liman added: “It’s been an exciting journey so far, and I’m eager to see where the story goes next.”

Jake isn’t typically cast in the roles he played in this movie. I enjoy movies that present actors in unexpected ways, like Matt Damon in a comedy or Casey Affleck as a leading man in a big commercial film. It was refreshing to see Jake excel as the lead in a large-scale commercial production like Road House. Since Jake and I are friends, it’s challenging for me to envision anyone else playing that [sequel] alongside him. Honestly, I’m not sure who could do it justice with him.

The director of “Swingers,” Doug Liman, has openly expressed his dissatisfaction towards Amazon regarding the streaming debut of his remake of “Road House.” This production turned out to be Prime Video’s most successful original release. Initially, Amazon had planned a theatrical release for the film, but Liman boycotted its premiere in protest against this change. In a frank letter, Liman criticized Amazon for reneging on their promise to release films in cinemas. Despite his initial anger, he ultimately attended the premiere, choosing to support the movie from the audience. He recently spoke more about his concerns in an interview published this week, stating:

Initially, everyone received payment as though the film would be released in cinemas. However, Amazon unexpectedly changed their plans, leaving no one with compensation for their work.

Doug Liman pointed out that Amazon kept all the profits from the movie’s extraordinary streaming views, leaving those who helped make it successful without receiving additional compensation. This is in stark contrast to his current project, The Instigators, where he worked with Apple. He commended Apple for being open about their intentions for a digital release right from the start, ensuring that everyone involved was fairly compensated through what he called a “streaming buyout.”

The filmmaker of “The Wall” remarked that if “Road House” had been shown in theaters, it would have boosted cinema finances and offered audiences a shared movie-watching moment. He highlighted that the movie performed exceptionally well with viewers, surpassing his past box office successes like “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” and “The Bourne Identity.” Moreover, he suggested that UFC star Conor McGregor’s involvement could have attracted more cinema-goers.

Although it’s yet to be confirmed if Doug Liman will take part in the Road House 2 production, the film The Instigators is set to hit theaters starting August 2 for a week-long run. Following its theatrical release, it will be accessible on Apple TV+ from August 9 for subscribers. In the interim, you can relive Doug Liman’s initial foray into bar bouncing by streaming Road House with an Amazon Prime subscription. As the year progresses, don’t forget to check the 2024 movie schedule regularly for updates on upcoming film releases.
