As a film critic with over four decades of observing and analyzing the cinematic landscape, I must say that Robert De Niro‘s latest Netflix project, “Zero Day,” is not just another addition to his already impressive repertoire but a timely and relevant reflection of our current political climate.
As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but get excited when I see a legend like Robert De Niro taking the reins, especially in his new Netflix thriller series, “Zero Day.” According to Variety, De Niro will grace our screens as a former U.S. President, tasked with untangling the web of mystery surrounding a cyberattack that’s left devastation in its wake across the nation. Given his vocal stance on current political matters, this role feels tailor-made for him in today’s climate.
Former U.S. President George Mullen (De Niro), leading the Zero Day Commission, is on a mission to discover those responsible for a nationwide cyber attack that has resulted in widespread destruction and countless deaths. Amidst a torrent of false information and the self-serving agendas of tech moguls, financiers, and government officials, Mullen’s relentless pursuit of the truth compels him to face his hidden past, all while jeopardizing everything he cherishes.
How ‘Zero Day’ Mirrors the Current Political Landscape
In my view, despite being produced prior to the recent U.S. election, the TV series “Zero Day” resonates strongly with our current political climate. Notably, Bassett’s character appears to be a tribute to Vice President Kamala Harris. On the other hand, Stevens embodies a character reminiscent of political pundits like Tucker Carlson’s adversary in the show, Evan Green. Lastly, Caplan plays her daughter, Alexandra, who skillfully leverages social media – much like AOC does.
In a recent conversation with Vanity Fair, Newman expressed that they didn’t foresee cognitive challenges for Biden becoming a significant campaign topic. Similarly, it wasn’t anticipated that a Black woman would emerge as the candidate. Instead, in Newman’s thoughts, [President Mitchell] was more reminiscent of Michelle Obama or something similar.
It appears that De Niro portrayed Mullen as a character with integrity, and he put his best effort into doing so. However, adapting to the fast-paced TV production schedule, which required filming Zero Day for 100 days, was something he had to adjust to.
“The bottom line is that he’s an honorable person who tries to do the right thing. There are ups and downs, personal this and that, his age and whether he’s fit—and that had nothing to do with what happened with Biden. It’s a long commitment—like three features at once.”
Robert De Niro will next take on the roles in the biographical crime drama “Alto Knights”, scheduled for release on March 25, 2025. After that, he’ll be seen in “Tin Soldier”, another action-packed thriller with an as-yet unspecified release date. Starting February 20, you can stream all six episodes of “Zero Day” on Netflix.
