Roland Emmerich Says Filming Those About to Die Was 'Murderous'

As a seasoned gamer and avid fan of both history and epic entertainment, I can’t help but be utterly captivated by the upcoming Peacock series, “Those About to Die.” Based on Daniel Mannix’s non-fiction book of the same name, this 10-episode series is a feast for the eyes and mind.

“Roland Emmerich, the renowned director, described the experience of shooting Peacock’s extraordinary new series ‘Those About to Die’ as ‘murderously challenging.’ This isn’t an everyday observation, and it’s safe to say that this series stands out. While it shares some resemblance with ‘Gladiator’ and ‘Game of Thrones,’ nothing quite compares to its grandeur and narrative depth. Debuting on the streamer July 18, this visually stunning and riveting 10-episode series is based on Daniel Mannix’s non-fiction book.”

As a gamer, I’m thrilled to share that I, Emmerich, am making my TV directorial debut with a new series set in Rome during 79 AD. Peacock is lucky to have me on board! You might know me from movies like “The Day After Tomorrow” and “The Patriot.” My passion for the Roman Empire runs deep, and I’m also serving as the supervising director for this project. With blockbusters like “Independence Day,” which earned over $817 million worldwide, under my belt, I’m confident that we’re in for another impressive feat. Creating “Independence Day” was a massive undertaking with its extensive cast and groundbreaking special effects. Now, let’s bring that same energy to this new project!

However, “Those About to Die” is just as grand in scale and narrative complexity, if not more so. We inquired about which production proved more difficult for the filmmaker to bring to life, and he responded:

I filmed “Independence Day” for 72 days, but this new project is closer to 230 days long. The pressure’s on since everything needs to move faster. So, shooting “Those About to Die” as a TV series was quite the challenge, as we could only work for ten hours each day… it was exhausting.

Directing Anthony Hopkins in Ancient Rome

As a gamer, I’d describe it like this: I’ve played many games set in ancient Rome, but none have delved into the gritty underbelly of its society quite like this one. From behind the scenes of shady business deals and the thrilling chaos of coliseum entertainment, to satisfying the bloodlust of the mob with gladiatorial combat – this game promises an authentic Roman experience. Leading our cast is none other than Sir Anthony Hopkins, a legendary actor who brings Emperor Vaspasian to life. He’s got his work cut out for him, trying to shape his two sons, Titus (Tom Hughes from “The English”) and Domitian (JoJo Macari of “Sex Education” and “Masters of Air”), into capable leaders.

When asked about working with acting legend Anthony Hopkins, who once again delivers an impressive performance, Emmerich described it as: “A straightforward experience. And I’ll explain why. I’ve also worked with Mel Gibson before on ‘The Patriot,’ and it was just as uncomplicated. I believe they simplify the director’s job for us.”

Roland Emmerich Says He’s a Perfectionist

The writer Robert Rodat, who has been nominated for an Oscar and is known for films like “The Patriot” and “Saving Private Ryan,” contributes to the production of this series. It explores the narratives of various groups: the imperial family, the Flavians, and their rivals, the Numidians, who are traders and fighters; gamblers and criminals; the Patricians, the ruling class; and the Corsi Brothers, newcomers from Spain, who become entangled in chariot racing.

Gabriella Pession, Rupert Penry-Jones, Pepe Barroso, Eneko Sargadoy, Goncalo Almeida, Sara Martins, Moe Hashim, Kyshan Wilson, Alicia Edogamhe, Iwan Rheon, Dimitri Leonida, and Johannes Johannesson are part of the large ensemble cast. In interviews with MovieWeb, several actors mentioned Emmerich’s determination as a director and his penchant for being fun-loving once filming wraps up.

Emmerich pondered, “I consider myself quite the perfectionist.” He continued, “I’m the type who might say, ‘This isn’t quick enough, this isn’t up to par.’ Yet, I give the actors ample freedom to express themselves.”

For your information, the show “Those About to Die” on Peacock is exceptionally well-crafted and will surely captivate you – both literally and figuratively. You’re invited to join us starting July 18. Click the link below to tune in: [Peacock Link]
