Roy Thomas Baker, Queen and The Cars Producer, Dies at 78

Roy Thomas Baker, a renowned British music producer known for collaborating with bands like Queen and The Cars during the ’70s and ’80s, has sadly passed away at the age of 78.

No cause of death has been announced. 

In his adolescent years, Baker embarked on his professional journey within the music industry. Over time, he collaborated with Gus Dudgeon, a producer known for working with Elton John. At the outset of his career, he also teamed up with Tony Visconti, one of David Bowie’s producers, as well as Mick Jagger, the Rolling Stones, The Who, and numerous other artists.

In 1972, Baker and Queen started collaborating on five different albums. During his time with the rock band, he was responsible for producing several of their tracks, such as “Bohemian Rhapsody” from their fourth studio album titled “A Night at the Opera,” which was released in 1975.

The tune earned nominations for two Grammy Awards and eventually made its way into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2004. It’s worth mentioning that “Bohemian Rhapsody” holds the title as the most-streamed song from the 20th century.

In the ’70s and ’80s, Baker held significant sway as a record producer. He worked on four albums for the band The Cars, produced Mötley Crüe’s first studio album titled “Too Fast for Love”, and handled the production of The Smashing Pumpkins’ 2007 and 2008 records, specifically “Zeitgeist” and “American Gothic”.

Previously, Queen’s Roger Taylor described Baker as someone who combined a measured level of discipline, a good dose of skepticism [smiles], and an intense fondness for rich desserts. However, he was extremely disciplined and strict initially. But despite this, he always ensured perfection – we would rehearse multiple times until the take was just right because back then, everything had to be perfect in one go.

Among the esteemed musicians I’ve had the privilege of working with are legends like Guns N’ Roses, Foreigner, Pilot, Ozzy Osbourne, and Journey, to name a few. It’s been an incredible journey collaborating with such great artists in the industry!

Survivors include his wife, Tere Livrano Baker, and his brother, Alan Baker.
