‘Rust’ Documentary Focused on Halyna Hutchins Set at Hulu

Hulu unveils a fresh documentary movie about the late cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, named “Last Shot: Rust and the Life of Halyna”.

On October 21, 2021, Hutchins tragically lost his life during a shooting incident on the set of ‘Rust’. The incident occurred when a prop gun that Alec Baldwin was handling accidentally went off.

The documentary, helmed by Rachel Mason (known for “Circus of Books” and “An Update on Our Family”), delves deeper than the public narrative to unveil the personal, untold story surrounding that fateful day and its subsequent events – as seen through the eyes of those directly impacted. The film intertwines the experiences of those present during the incident at “Rust” with those who, like Mason, lost a dear friend and collaborator, and continue to cope with the emotional fallout in its aftermath, according to a press statement.

Additionally, the movie will feature exclusive backstage footage from the Rust set, publicly available court documents, and Hutchins’ private collection of personal items.

Mason expressed in a statement that Halyna held significant value to him for numerous causes. Beyond being a friend, she was also a partner in work. It was hard for Mason to envision making a movie about her while she was still alive; instead, his aspiration was to produce films together and aid her in the multitude of movies he believed she would create.

She added, “After her death, there was an overwhelming media buzz that seemed to wipe out Halyna’s memory, overshadowing her loss amidst the surrounding disputes. Our film intends to keep Halyna as our focal point, providing a depiction of those who were with her during her last 12 days. We hope this portrayal, made possible by their dedication, presents an incomplete but vivid picture of Halyna to the world.

This document is created by Julee Metz, Kate Barry, Jon Bardin, Will Cohen (from Story Syndicate), and Jessica Grimshaw, Nick Shumaker, Jennifer Sears (from Anonymous Content). The executive producers are Dan Cogan, Liz Garbus, Tommy Coriale (from Story Syndicate), Lizzie Fox and Casey Meurer (from Concordia Studio), David Levine (from Anonymous Content), and Matthew Hutchins. Mason is responsible for its production and direction, in collaboration with FutureClown Productions.

The project is one of two documentaries focusing on Hutchins. Rory Kennedy, director of the Oscar-nominated 2014 film ‘Last Days in Vietnam’ and 2007’s Emmy-winning ‘Ghosts of Abu Ghraib’, is also producing a film involving Baldwin, where Baldwin actively participates in the events, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

After the demise of Hutchins, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the person responsible for loading the gun’s ammunition, received a 18-month prison sentence due to involuntary manslaughter. On the other hand, the criminal case against Baldwin was dropped by the judge as they dismissed the involuntary manslaughter charges, concluding that crucial evidence was deliberately withheld from the defense by the prosecution.
