As a dedicated gamer and avid TV show fan, I can’t help but be thrilled by the latest news about the revival of CBS’s police procedural series, S.W.A.T. I’ve been following this show since its inception, and it’s been an exciting ride watching the team’s fast-paced actions and personal dramas unfold.
CBS has revealed that their police procedural show, “S.W.A.T.”, will come back on TV this fall. This announcement comes soon after the series was rescued from cancellation. Mark your calendars for October 18, 8:00 p.m. EST, as “S.W.A.T.” kicks off CBS’s lineup of police- and public service-themed shows every Friday night. At 9:00 p.m., catch the third season of “Fire Country,” and at 10:00 p.m., watch the final season of “Blue Bloods.”
The cancellation of the show by CBS last May was met with strong opposition from fans and star Shemar Moore. Following the backlash, CBS decided to reverse their decision and save the series for a seventh season. However, this time around, CBS has remained cautious and hasn’t declared that season eight will be the final one. In other words, due to public pressure, CBS changed its mind about canceling the show twice – first after season six, then after season seven.
S.W.A.T., featuring Shemar Moore as Sergeant Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson, heads up the LAPD’s Special Weapons and Tactics unit in this action-packed series. The show not only offers thrilling encounters but also explores the personal lives of team members for added depth. Alongside Moore, the cast includes David Lim as Victor Tan, Jay Harrington as David “Deacon” Kay, Patrick St. Esprit as Commander Robert Hicks, Kenny Johnson as Dominique Luca, Alex Russell (as Jim Street), and Lina Esco (as Christina “Chris” Alonso). Sadly, Rochelle Aytes, who portrayed Hondo’s wife Nichelle Carmichael, won’t be back for season eight as she’s committed to another CBS production – the Sherlock Holmes series titled Watson.
Strong Fan Support Keeps S.W.A.T. On the Air
As a dedicated fan, I must share that it’s quite rare for a canceled network show to find its way back to the same network. And it’s almost unheard of for a series to be rescued from being axed not once, but twice. In the extraordinary case of S.W.A.T., an influential and passionate fanbase rallied behind it. Interestingly enough, CBS didn’t require much persuasion since Variety revealed that the show was still delivering impressive ratings with a whopping 8.8 million viewers last season, spanning all viewing platforms.
The show’s popularity has been boosted by its accessibility on multiple streaming platforms. Seasons of “S.W.A.T.” can be found on Netflix, Hulu, Paramount+, Pluto, Roku, and Tubi. This extensive availability has granted the series the necessary visibility to cultivate a dedicated fanbase who rallied to save it from cancellation twice.
S.W.A.T., a popular TV show, was created by Aaron Rahsaan Thomas and Shawn Ryan. They also act as its executive producers and showrunners. The series is inspired by the original ABC program that broadcasted from 1975 to 1976, featuring Steve Forrest and Robert Urich in lead roles. A movie adaptation of this concept emerged in 2003, with Colin Farrell, Michelle Rodriguez, and Samuel L. Jackson headlining the cast.
Six initial seasons of S.W.A.T. are available for streaming on Netflix, while season seven can be found on Paramount+.
