‘Salim-Javed are copy-writers, not writers’ says FIR writer Amit Aaryan; makes shocking allegations of them copying ‘from other works without hesitation’

As a lifelong aficionado of Bollywood, I find myself deeply intrigued by the recent claims made by Amit Aaryan regarding the legendary writing duo, Salim-Javed. Having spent countless hours immersed in the rich tapestry of Indian cinema, I must admit that their work has always held a special place in my heart. However, as a student of storytelling and a firm believer in originality, I feel compelled to examine Aaryan’s assertions with an open mind.

The 70s was one of the most iconic decades in the history of Bollywood, and the writing duo Salim-Javed is credited for creating those epic stories. Recently, Amit Aaryan, who wrote the TV show FIR, claimed that Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar are more like ‘copy-writers’ because they plagiarised from other writers and never produced original work.

Apart from his fame, Amit Aaryan is recognized for crafting television series such as Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai and Lapatagan. In a recent conversation with Digital Commentary, he openly discussed his thoughts about Salim-Javid, a renowned screenwriting duo in Bollywood.

He said, “I do not consider Salim and Javed writers. They are two people whom the whole world salutes, but they have only, in their entire lives, plagiarised. Salim and Javed are copy-writers, not writers.” The writer shared some examples, like the story of Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay in 1975, which he alleged was taken from a Raj Khosla movie, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, from 1971.

Amit mentioned that in the film “Sholay,” a man who had lost his hands and seen his family slaughtered by a bandit seeks vengeance on his adversary using others as instruments. In the series “Mera Gaon Mera Desh,” Vinod Khanna portrayed Jabbar Singh, later known as Gabbar Singh in “Sholay.” Jayant, the actor, played a soldier who had lost an arm in the movie “Khosla” and had both his hands severed in “Sholay.” However, Amit pointed out that the character of Amitabh Bachchan was introduced into the story for “Sholay.

Aaryan pointed out the resemblance between movie plots, asserting that each scene in Sholay was inspired by other films. Furthermore, he suggested that the 1975 film Deewaar, produced by Yash Chopra, bore a striking resemblance to Gunga Jumna.

The FIR claimed that the writing team, Salim-Javed were accused of copying from their work, specifically pointing out films such as Gunga Jumna, Deewaar, and Shakti. It was stated that every scene and action sequence was plagiarized, yet they are widely praised by the world. Amit commented, “Salim and Javed are superior in business and marketing. They knew how to effectively market their work and tell a compelling story.

Beyond his spectacular assertions, Aaryan reminisced about the fact that Salim Khan was an avid fan of the TV series FIR, which he had penned. He even extended an invitation to the team for lunch with his family. Recently, a documentary titled “Angry Young Men: Salim Javed” was released, and Aaryan mentioned it as a means for them to clean up their image, particularly that of their offspring.
