Scarlett Johansson Wants To Return to the MCU as Black Widow

As a devoted fan and admirer of Scarlett Johansson‘s exceptional talent, I wholeheartedly share her desire to delve deeper into the captivating story of Black Widow, particularly focusing on her complex relationship with Hawkeye. The chemistry between these two characters is undeniably one of the most compelling aspects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it’s a shame that their rich history hasn’t been fully explored on screen yet.

Just like many Marvel Cinematic Universe fans, Scarlett Johansson is eager to find out more about the events in Budapest. The bond between Black Widow (Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) is one of the most genuine and deep friendships within the MCU, as they share a past that extends beyond their time with the Avengers. Natasha Romanov has already had a standalone film that delves into her character’s origins. However, Johansson believes that this movie didn’t delve deeply enough into their shared history before Budapest.

Discussing her upcoming movie, “Transformers One,” with MTV UK, Johansson was curious about reprising one of her previous roles and delving into its backstory. Swiftly, the actress expressed a desire to revisit Black Widow, hoping for further exploration of her on-screen bond with Hawkeye.

“I probably would have gone further back in the
Black Widow
story,” Johansson said.

2021’s film, titled after the events of “Captain America: Civil War,” brings Natasha Romanov back together with her comrades, aiming to terminate the Black Widow program permanently. This film delves into the enigmatic history of the character and introduces significant figures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe such as Yelena Belova (played by Florence Pugh) and Red Guardian (David Harbour). However, it’s not the approach that Johansson intended for the movie, as she clarified:

I’d be thrilled to catch a glimpse into the storyline featuring Hawkeye and Black Widow, particularly their earlier years, as portrayed in “Black Widow”.

Could Scarlett Johansson Return to the MCU?

In the latest appearance of Natasha Romanov, or Black Widow, on screen, Scarlett Johansson reprised her role after her character’s self-sacrificing act in Avengers: Endgame. Given that Black Widow is dead, how could the actress return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)? Firstly, it’s essential to understand that death holds little significance within the MCU due to its time-travel and multiverse capabilities. With characters like Wolverine appearing in different ways as demonstrated in Deadpool & Wolverine, it is plausible that a variant of Natasha Romanov could reappear in the MCU. If Robert Downey Jr.’s character can make a return to the universe, then anything becomes possible.

It’s worth noting that Scarlett Johansson goes back and forth on the idea of returning to the MCU. Like much of the fan base, the actress has stated a belief that Marvel Studios should leave her character alone, as it would undermine her sacrifice. She said:

“I think it might be… I think it was the end, right? I don’t know how you come back from that. […] She did, she did. She passed. […] I would have… it would be a miracle. It would be real Marvel miracle. It would be a marvel. But, you know, who knows? Eh… I’m not sure.”

Although Scarlett Johansson won’t reprise her role as an actress in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), she’s still deeply connected to it. She’s taking on a new role as an executive producer for the upcoming MCU film, Thunderbolts, which features a team of anti-heroes that includes her sister Yelena. So, while Johansson may step away from acting in the MCU, she can still influence the universe from the cozy seat of a producer’s chair.
