As a long-time fan of the Scary Movie franchise, I can’t help but reminisce about the early days when Anna Faris brought Cindy Campbell to life in a way that still leaves me laughing out loud. The first movie, released back in 2000, was a game-changer for spoofing scary movies, with its focus on ripping into Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer.
For five installments, the “Scary Movie” series has gained popularity by poking fun at horror films. The first one remains the most beloved. When this franchise started in 2000, its primary goal was to mercilessly satirize two well-known late ’90s movies: “Scream” and “I Know What You Did Last Summer”.
As a huge fan, I can’t help but highlight one significant factor that contributed to the movie’s triumph. That was Anna Faris’ hilarious portrayal of Cindy Campbell in “Scary Movie,” who unintentionally became a target for a serial killer inspired by the “Scream” series. In an interview with PEOPLE about her latest comedy, “My Spy: The Eternal City,” Anna shared some insights into how two actresses whose serious performances were mimicked in “Scary Movie” reacted to the parody.
Concerning Neve Campbell, who is set to return as her character in “Scream 7” in the “Scream” franchise, Faris commented:
At a later audition, I came across Neve whom I had previously met. I found myself in an uncomfortable position and felt compelled to apologize unnecessarily. However, Neve was gracious and charming throughout the encounter.
As a gamer, I’ve come across Jennifer Love Hewitt in two horror movies: “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and its less appreciated follow-up, “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.” Surprisingly, she contacted Faris during that period.
After the initial release, Hewitt surprised me with an extravagant arrangement of blossoms. She chuckled and mentioned, “I found that absolutely hilarious.” It was a truly delightful gesture.
What Was Faris’ Strategy for Playing Scary Movie’s Cindy Campbell?
Faris played Cindy Campbell for four Scary Movie installments before moving on to greener, but mostly still silly, pastures. For the wretched Scary Movie V, the torch was passed to Ashley Tisdale to lead the movie. But it just wasn’t the same. As much as a Scary Movie needs jokes that actually work, it seemingly needed Faris in equal measure. Speaking about her way of getting into the character, Faris said:
I aimed to act foolishly so as not to offend anyone by appearing to mock them. I’m good at making fun of myself, it seems. To my knowledge, no one has taken serious issue with my actions yet.
A new version of “Scary Movie,” the horror film series, is being developed by Paramount. It’s undecided if Anna Faris will participate again. considering the financial successes of the earlier films versus the last one, it would make good business sense to have her involved once more. However, she comes with two stipulations.
I really enjoy collaborating with Regina once more. Her company brings me immense joy. We can hardly contain our laughter around each other the entire day. If given the opportunity, I would choose to work with Regina Hall above all else – though the financial aspect is also appealing, it’s primarily my affection for Regina that drives this desire.
From my perspective as a passionate fan, the collaboration between Faris and Hall played a significant role in the initial success of the first four films. Their on-screen chemistry was undeniable from the get-go, and I believe there’s still so much unexplored potential between them. If the franchise decides to continue, having these two talented actors reunite would be an inspired choice – perhaps even a crucial one for maintaining the magic that made us fall in love with the series in the first place.
