Previously renowned for his role in creating iconic films such as Robert De Niro’s ‘Taxi Driver’, Schrader is now facing a different kind of recognition. As reported by The Independent, a woman aged 26 has filed a lawsuit against him, claiming that he exposed himself during their professional interaction from 2021 to 2024 and created a sexually inappropriate work environment for her.
In official records, a woman identified simply as Jane Doe alleged that Schrader enticed her into a hotel room and forcefully kissed her against her verbal objections during the showing of his film “Oh, Canada” at the Cannes Film Festival.
In the court case, it’s asserted that three days after the initial incident, the accuser visited Schrader’s hotel room. This was allegedly following a series of persistent phone calls and aggressive text messages from Schrader, stating he couldn’t pack on his own because he claimed to be near death. Upon opening the door, it’s claimed that Schrader was naked from the waist down, only wearing an open bathrobe. Subsequently, he is said to have repeatedly urged her to check how wet his bed sheets were, while she was packing his items in a state of petrified silence.
As stated by Doe’s lawyers, it is alleged that Schrader acknowledged in written communications following the events, that his behavior was both unwanted and inappropriate. Furthermore, she asserted that she was terminated by Schrader in September 2024 as a form of retaliation for rebuffing his advances of a sexual and romantic nature.
As per Doe’s account, her legal representatives and those of Schrader reached a confidential settlement. However, despite both parties agreeing on the terms, Doe claims that Schrader hesitated to sign the agreement. Eventually, he informed her that after some introspection, he felt unable to “conscience himself” if he were to fulfill the payment obligations. Menaka Fernando, Doe’s lawyer, has issued a statement asking for media respect of Doe’s privacy and refraining from seeking additional comments at this time.
Schrader Denies the Allegations
It’s not surprising that Schrader’s legal team have responded, issuing a statement on his behalf, which states unequivocally that the accusations against him are unfounded and misrepresent him negatively. They characterize the case as opportunistic and without merit. Lawyer Philip Kessler communicated this to The Independent.
In this case, it appears that the claims made by the plaintiff against Mr. Schrader are filled with significant untruths. These false accusations seem to be intended to misrepresent Mr. Schrader in a negative light, with the ultimate goal of pressuring him into reaching a settlement. I would like to clarify that at no point did Mr. Schrader engage in any form of sexual activity with the plaintiff, nor did he make any attempts to do so. We will firmly uphold his defense against these allegations.
According to a new statement by Kessler, the allegations against his client are not only inaccurate but also misleading, overblown, and exaggerated. The true nature of these events will be demonstrated as having been greatly distorted from reality.
