Mason Gooding, who plays a significant role in the “Scream” series, has given us some thrilling insights about the upcoming movie, “Scream 7“. There have been whispers about familiar faces returning and unexpected newcomers. However, Gooding shed light on one particularly chilling aspect of the film: “Ghostface is more merciless than ever before.
Fans of horror movies are probably eagerly anticipating Gooding’s chat with Variety during the debut of his new movie, titled “Heart Eyes“, a Valentine’s Day slasher. While “Heart Eyes” has been receiving positive reviews (earning a 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing), Gooding also discussed the upcoming sequel to the iconic “Scream” franchise, which was originally created by legendary director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson. This new installment is set to hit theaters in February 2026.
The return of Kevin Williamson as director seems to emphasize the continuity with what has previously been established, offering no clearer evidence of this than any other indicator.
To really drive home that aspect, let me express my viewpoint: Ghostface has never been more ruthless than he is now. Without giving too much away, there are some things they do to the human body that I believe Kevin is pioneering, and I’m hoping fans will find it intriguing, if not a bit disturbing in an engaging way.
In the makeup room, I came across a prosthetic that left me feeling queasy. Once you lay eyes on it, you’ll understand my reaction; it’s truly remarkable work. The special effects team over there is simply outstanding, putting in long hours to create such impressive results.
With a Year to Go, Here is Everything We Know About ‘Scream 7’
Indeed, it’s clear that Gooding is just as enthusiastic as everyone else about revisiting the realm of Ghostface and his (or their?) passion for horror flicks. Notably, the actor also mentioned looking forward to working alongside franchise regular Neve Campbell once more, who has chosen to join the cast after taking a break for Scream VI.
Working with Neve is a pleasure, as I didn’t have much chance to interact with her on a personal note before. So, merely being in her presence seems like I’m connecting with her past, and it leaves me feeling enriched.
Gooding is set to team up with other “Scream” stars who have agreed to participate in the upcoming film, an endeavor aimed at rejuvenating the series following a slight dip in 2023. The original director, Christopher Landon, along with Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, have departed from the project. However, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard, and Scott Foley are reprising their roles, as they’ve been part of the franchise at one point or another. To avoid spoilers for those unfamiliar with the initial “Scream” installments, we won’t reveal who donned the first Ghostface masks.
In addition to the returning cast members, Scream 7 is set to feature newcomers such as Joel McHale, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace, Anna Camp, and Isabel May. The movie’s release date is scheduled for February 27, 2026. Although the specifics of the plot are still being kept secret, the unexpected reappearance of two original characters suggests that Scream 7‘s screenwriter, Guy Busick, may have to devise a method to revive previously deceased villains.
