Shane Meadows Teams Up With ‘Adolescence’ Writer Jack Thorne for Feature Film Return

Following over ten years away from the silver screen, Shane Meadows is set to come back to cinematography with his fresh project, titled “Chork“.

Written by Jack Thorne, author of “Adolescence”, the story unfolds along the eastern coastline of England where we find 15-year-old Kit and 11-year-old Ani. Having left their foster home, they embark on a journey across the coastline in search of a better life. As law enforcement pursues them relentlessly and a nationwide manhunt ensues, Kit employs her courage and intelligence to safeguard Ani and complete their quest.

In this revised version, I aimed for a natural and easy-to-read style while maintaining the original’s context.

Under Shaheen Baig’s guidance, who often works alongside Meadows (on “Adolescence” and “Hot Milk”), they have successfully assembled the main cast for the film through nationwide open auditions held earlier this year across the United Kingdom.

Meadows stated, “It’s truly an honor to be back in filmmaking after 17 years, collaborating with ‘megadude’ Jack Thorne once more, and working alongside such talented individuals. Our narrative revolves around two incredibly intelligent, hilariously witty, and cunningly clever young characters embarking on a spontaneous journey across this beautiful island.

Without a doubt,” he went on, “I’m thrilled beyond words about what we’ve managed to document during their journey. I’m equally thankful to our partners at BBC Film, BFI, Screen Yorkshire, Hoopsa Films, and Altitude for their unwavering faith and assistance throughout.

Shawn Meadows received widespread recognition for his films such as “TwentyFourSeven,” “Dead Man’s Shoes,” “A Room for Romeo Brass,” and “Somers Town.” His small-screen projects include “This Is England” (first aired in Toronto, 2006), “The Virtues” featuring Stephen Graham, and “The Gallows Pole.

Chork is created by the duo Ben Pugh and Cathy King, as well as Lauren Dark and Amy Jackson from Unified. Additionally, Meadows’ Big Arty and Thorne’s One Shoe Films are involved in its production. Both teams will also serve as executive producers for this project.

The movie has been funded by BBC Film, British Film Institute (granting National Lottery funds), Screen Yorkshire through their Yorkshire Content Fund, and Hoopsa Films.

The executive producers for this film are Eva Yates and Kristin Irving (BBC Film), Louise Ortega (BFI), Caroline Cooper Charles (Screen Yorkshire), Sonny Gill and Tim Macready (Hoopsa Films), Ali Jazayeri and Keith Kehoe (Three Picture Capital). Additionally, Laura Jackson and Joshua Horsfield are involved. The film was developed in collaboration with BBC Film.

2026 will see me, an excited cinema-goer, getting the chance to witness the premiere of “Chork” in cinemas across the United Kingdom and Ireland! The distributor, Altitude, has taken on the task of managing international sales for this highly anticipated film. I can hardly wait!

Yates, who oversees BBC Film, expressed: “Shane Meadows’ movies are central to modern British independent filmmaking, and we can’t wait to help bring him back. This time, he’s joined by a remarkable group of young actors, his talented writing partner Jack Thorne, and an unconventional tale about love, rehabilitation, and the hidden power within youth.
