As a gamer who’s had his fair share of emotional rollercoasters in virtual realities, I can’t help but feel a strange sense of familiarity when diving into the world of “Shrinking”. The struggles and complexities portrayed in this show seem to echo the intricate web of human emotions that we often navigate within our games.
Initially glancing at the second installment of the Apple TV+’s comedic series “Shrinking,” grief-stricken father Jimmy, portrayed by Jason Segel, admits to suspecting that his daughter, Alice (Lukita Maxwell), might be concerned about him.
A short while later in the video, Alice voices her worries that her father might revert to his old self following her mother’s passing: “I just can’t get him out of my mind, fearing he may return to how he was after mom passed away.
Jimmy and Alice each discuss their apprehensions individually with Harrison Ford, who plays the role of Paul, a therapist that Jimmy knows.
As Jimmy raised his worries, I found myself echoing his sentiments. You see, just like him, I’ve been learning to cope with a health challenge – Parkinson’s disease. Much like me trying to rebuild my relationship with my family, Paul, a familiar figure from season one, is going through the same journey. And it hits home when I acknowledge, “It’s tough to accept that my child understands just how vulnerable I am.
Paul suggests to Jimmy, “Perhaps you might want to give traditional therapy a go? Maybe it could help you lead a more ordinary life.
He later says, “It’s not your patients’ job to heal you.”
The trailer additionally reveals Jimmy grappling with certain repercussions stemming from his unusual treatment approach, as seen during the previous season.
Following the conclusion of season one where Heidi Gardner’s character, Grace (one of Jimmy’s patients), was shown pushing her husband off a cliff, viewers find Grace in an orange jumpsuit, confined within bars, engaging in a meeting with Jimmy and his legal companion Brian (played by Michael Urie).
“I pushed my husband off a cliff. I’m a psycho with good hair,” she says.
In the course of a counseling session, Sean expresses, “Aren’t you planning on ‘manipulating’ me in some way… The unconventional therapy you practice off-site, which Paul dislikes so much?
Jimmy likes having his name turned into a verb, saying, “It just sounds like a movement.”
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but notice that the trailer hints at Jimmy and Gaby (Jessica Williams) maintaining a robust relationship. In a playful scene, they engage in flirtatious banter in the break room, with their bond deepening after she catches a glimpse of his “romantic underwear” peeking out from his jeans’ top.
“Dress for the job you want,” Jimmy says.
The second season of the series “Shrinking,” consisting of twelve episodes, will debut on Apple TV+ on October 16th. It will initially air two episodes, and from then on, a new episode will be released every week until Christmas Day (December 25th).
The series was developed by Jason Segel, Bill Lawrence, and Brett Goldstein; it’s been announced that Goldstein will make an appearance as a special guest in the second season, a sneak peek of which is provided in the trailer.
