More than a decade has passed since the release of Sleeping Dogs, and fans continue to long for a similar game experience. If everything falls into place, there could be a sequel in the future. Interestingly, actor Simu Liu has been putting in effort to obtain the rights for a Sleeping Dogs film – an endeavor that Donnie Yen was unsuccessful with some years back.
As the project continues to develop, Liu stays optimistic that the executives will eventually grasp his concept for the movie version of the story.
Initially envisioning a film, then a game sequel for all – this has been my long-held ambition,” Liu expressed on January 31. This tweet, viewed by over 1.4 million people, ignited a flurry of responses from enthusiastic Sleeping Dogs fans, eagerly awaiting updates regarding the project.
Sleeping Dogs stood out uniquely among its contemporaries. While it bore resemblance to the Grand Theft Auto series, it distinguished itself by crafting a distinct identity through its immersive cityscape, intense combat mechanics, and a more grounded crime narrative. Furthermore, it drew heavily on the cinematic flair of classic Hong Kong action films, reflecting the style of directors such as John Woo and action stars like Tony Jaa and Bruce Lee.
Instead of an exact replica, the game’s portrayal of Hong Kong offered an engaging experience that successfully transports players into a vibrant, neon-lit cityscape overrun by criminal organizations.
Through fierce competition, United Front Games and Square Enix successfully acquired the rights for the video game series known as True Crime. Over time, they evolved this defunct franchise into the well-known title, Sleeping Dogs.
Following the unsuccessful endeavor to create True Crime: Hong Kong, it was Square Enix who recognized a unique opportunity – and they proved correct. In a manner reminiscent of capturing lightning in a bottle, Sleeping Dogs sold more than 1.5 million copies by September 2012, barely a month after its debut launch. Two years later, a Definitive Edition was introduced, bringing in fresh admirers along the way.

The persistent attempts by Simu Liu to secure film rights for Sleeping Dogs may pave the way for a fresh chapter in the series. There’s been a lot of buzz about the prospect of a follow-up, with many fans eagerly anticipating more tales involving Wei Shen’s character.
In response to a fan’s comment, Liu playfully stated that if the current project is successfully completed, he would first contact Donnie (Yen) on the phone. Next, he would call Will Yun Lee, who originally voiced Wei, and finally, he would use DoorDash to locate a nearby restaurant offering pork buns. This humorously expresses Liu’s backing for Donnie Yen, even though Yen had previously been unsuccessful in obtaining the movie rights.
In a potential follow-up to Sleeping Dogs, significant enhancements are anticipated, particularly a superior game engine and a revamp of the problematic driving functions. Players are further expecting a captivating narrative in this new installment.
There’s a lot more ground to cover in Wei Shen’s story. Maybe the forthcoming film and possible follow-up will unveil fresh dimensions to one of gaming’s unsuspected gems.
