As a seasoned moviegoer with over three decades of cinematic adventures under my belt, I must say that the current controversy surrounding Disney’s Snow White remake has piqued my curiosity. It seems that this enchanting tale, which was once the epitome of childhood dreams, has found itself in a modern-day quagmire.
At D23 on August 9, 2024, Disney unveiled a sneak peek of the trailer for their upcoming film, titled Snow White. This is a reimagining of the classic tale, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Disney’s inaugural animated production. In this new adaptation, Rachel Zegler from West Side Story will embody Snow White, while Gal Gadot, known for her role as Wonder Woman, will portray the Evil Queen. Initially slated for release in March 2024, the film has been pushed back a full year and is now scheduled to premiere in theaters in March 2025.
As a cinephile, I’ve been keeping an eye on the response to the latest trailer for Snow White. Even though three weeks have passed since its release, it has garnered over a million dislikes on YouTube, according to CBR. While it’s worth noting that there are 82,000 likes, the massive number of dislikes, although not visible to the general public, can be seen using browser extensions. Since its upload following D23, the trailer has been viewed by a staggering 8.4 million viewers.
Is There More To These Down Votes Than Meets The Eye?
The tale of Snow White has stirred up debate since its announcement, with some critiques being valid and others questionable. Actor Peter Dinklage voiced criticism over the decision to reimagine the film, arguing that it perpetuates an outdated stereotype by casting dwarfs as magical beings. Disney’s efforts to avoid controversy by promising a reimagining of the characters as new enchanted creatures, but still utilizing CGI dwarf characters, have been heavily criticized. Critics argue that this move takes away opportunities from actors with dwarfism, who already struggle to find work in Hollywood. Furthermore, the visual effects for the movie have faced harsh criticism, with the dwarfs, modeled after their 1937 counterparts, possessing an unsettling resemblance to real-life characters, a phenomenon known as the uncanny valley effect.
It’s worth noting that some negative sentiment towards Snow White may stem from a backlash against the movie itself. Critics have accused the film of being too progressive for casting Rachel Zegler as Snow White, and this has fueled the spread of misleading stories about the actress online. While it’s possible that some people legitimately dislike the movie, others might express their disapproval because they have personal issues with the star, which is evident in the comments section of the trailer.
The amount of dislikes the trailer has also might not be entirely reflective of the real world. The system can easily be manipulated by review bombers, as seen with The Acolyte, which, like Snow White, had a hate campaign against it before anyone saw a frame of footage. Disney’s remake of The Little Mermaid also had its trailer hit with racist comments and over 1 million dislikes, but that didn’t stop the movie landing a $117.5 million Memorial Day opening. The film also became the sixth highest-grossing movie of 2023 at the domestic box office.
