With “Star Trek: Section 31” now streamable via Paramount+, this debatable expansion of the franchise has resurfaced once more. There’s been discussion about whether Section 31 conflicts with Gene Roddenberry’s Starfleet vision, a debate that began during “Deep Space Nine”. Creator Alex Kurtzman and director Olutande Osunsanmi have emphasized to TopMob that they made every effort to minimize contributing to the argument for its irrelevance.
Despite some unfavorable feedback from critics regarding “Star Trek: Section 31,” it’s been noted that other aspects of the film have received more criticism. Michael Chabon (Kurtzman) shared with me the reasons behind their decision to avoid a darker narrative and how they believed Section 31 aligns with the idealistic principles of the universe, even within its utopian context.
The discussion among fans about Section 31 in the Star Trek universe is quite extensive, with some questioning whether it aligns with Roddenberry’s original vision or not. Our decision regarding the show’s tone was influenced by this very question. We wanted to avoid a narrative that was excessively grim, as such a story might seem out of place for Star Trek. However, we were determined to maintain the essence of Starfleet and its charter, which governs its actions within Federation space and adherence to specific rules. These rules have their limitations, and it is situations that fall outside these boundaries where Section 31 comes into play – essentially acting as a ‘clean-up’ crew for Starfleet.
One point that was undisputed was the inclusion of Section 31 in the storyline, considering how closely Star Trek: Discovery intertwined the organization with Michelle Yeoh’s character Philippa Georgiou. Initially, the project was intended as a series, but upon Yeoh receiving an Oscar, adjustments were made to align more with her demanding Hollywood commitments.
The movie subtly veils the methods by which Star Trek: Section 31 escapes Starfleet protocol breaches, but Alex Kurtzman insists that the proof exists. He elaborated on the initial premise presented at the film’s outset and navigating the delicate balance between innovative storytelling and adhering to the established essence of the franchise.
We made it a point, as mentioned at the start of the film, to clarify that this movie doesn’t unfold within Federation territory. The characters are operating outside of Federation space to address an issue that could potentially impact Federation space, similar to how the CIA operates abroad. This narrative approach felt right for us, and we wanted to make it clear from the beginning so that Star Trek fans who cherish the essence of what makes Star Trek special would understand that we’re intentionally doing something different here. However, our story remains rooted in Roddenberry’s core vision of optimism. In my view, Star Trek is all about that optimism, and we made sure to uphold that by the end of the film. Furthermore, the tone enables us to continually reinforce this optimistic spirit and remind you that we’re also committed to honoring what you love about Star Trek.
In a new twist, Star Trek: Section 31 has paved the way for a potential sequel. Although critics’ opinions haven’t been overwhelmingly positive, the commitment of Michelle Yeoh to reprise her role as Philippa Georgiou may sway Paramount+ to approve another installment amidst their other planned Trek productions. As of now, no official announcement has been made regarding a sequel. If one does materialize, it will be intriguing to observe how it addresses the concerns viewers had with this film. Notably, we had to endure Star Trek: The Motion Picture before encountering The Wrath Of Khan.
Star Trek enthusiasts can look forward to the revival of Strange New Worlds this year as they eagerly await sequel updates. Meanwhile, there’s talk of a theatrical film that serves as an origin story, but Alex Kurtzman has reportedly stepped back from involvement in the theatrical side of Trek. Here’s to hoping we’ll receive more details on the movie soon, possibly even a trailer to stir anticipation.
It was noted that “Star Trek: Section 31” has concluded on Paramount+. For those who haven’t seen it, I strongly recommend giving it a try, as I believe it’s worth your time, especially compared to some of the less impressive films in the series. You can judge for yourself by watching it.
