On April 22, Season 2 of Andor is set to debut, marking approximately two years and nine months since Season 1 first aired. While writers’ and actors’ strikes in 2023 undoubtedly contributed to the delay, it’s important to note that creating a Star Wars TV series is an impressive undertaking compared to the movies, given the extensive amount of writing, filming, editing, and other work involved. Filming for Andor Season 1 spanned from late November 2020 to September 2021, highlighting the intensity of this production process.

It turns out that Tony Gilroy found it difficult to commit to three more seasons of Andor, and there was another reason: if filming continued for too long, Diego Luna’s character, Cassian Andor, could appear older than he did in his most recent appearance in chronological order. Recall that Rogue One was filmed in 2015 and released at the end of 2016.

Instead, it was decided to span the last four years of Cassian’s life over three separate episodes for the series Andor. This intriguing project has me wondering if anyone’s tackled something similar before. Instead of progressing day by day, we’ll leap forward a year for each section, and we plan to creatively utilize these time skips. We’ll revisit for three days at a stretch, so it’s like jumping between Thursday-Saturday or Monday-Wednesday. The challenge lies in smoothly transitioning back [to start each chapter]. Our goal was to make this return as graceful and effortless as possible, allowing the story to pick up right where it left off. We conducted numerous trials to ensure a successful transition.

Although it’s disappointing that Tony Gilroy’s original five-season plan for Andor didn’t materialize, I find solace in the fact that, as Diego Luna noted, we effectively made four movies instead. Even though we won’t delve deeply into his Rebel years like Season 1, it’s still a substantial period of time we’ll be covering. If not for the pandemic and strikes, those five seasons might have been realized, but I’m content knowing that the show will wrap up with a predetermined ending.
