As a film enthusiast with over three decades of immersion in the galaxy far, far away, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia upon hearing about James Mangold’s upcoming “Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi.” With my first memories being of watching the original trilogy on VHS, it’s heartening to see Disney embracing the rich tapestry of Star Wars lore that Lucasfilm created.
Just like every Star Wars production, the film titled Dawn of the Jedi has been enveloped in secrecy. However, director James Mangold has given fans a hint about its potential release date. Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi will transport viewers to an era even before the original trilogy, approximately 25,000 years ago – a time that could be referred to as “A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.” Mangold’s standalone movie is one of the few Star Wars films in development after Disney and Lucasfilm trimmed down the overcrowded list of post-sequel trilogy projects.
In an interview with Empire Magazine for the promotion of his upcoming Bob Dylan biopic titled “A Complete Unknown”, James Mangold shared some insights about the potential start date for filming “Dawn of the Jedi”. After wrapping up the post-production and press for “A Complete Unknown”, Mangold plans to dive into “Dawn of the Jedi” production. If everything goes as planned, filming could commence as early as next year; however, no specific month was mentioned. Fans are eagerly anticipating the release of “Dawn of the Jedi”, with hopes of seeing it in theaters around late 2026 (optimistically) or more realistically, in 2027.
Dawn of the Jedi” is set to unveil a period in the “Star Wars” universe that hasn’t been portrayed on screen before. The emergence of the Jedi Order was previously illustrated in comic books titled “Dawn of the Jedi,” which were part of the Star Wars Legends series. However, when Disney acquired the Star Wars franchise from Lucasfilm, many elements from the Legends canon were discarded. Yet, it appears that Disney is gradually accepting and reintroducing these beloved Legends stories, much to the delight of long-time “Star Wars” enthusiasts.
The Upcoming Star Wars Movies Are Currently Uncertain
For the first time in a while, James Mangold has unveiled potential production timeline for “Dawn of the Jedi,” which is exciting news for “Star Wars” enthusiasts. After the sequel trilogy concluded with “The Rise of Skywalker,” Disney has been working on numerous new projects. Veteran “Star Wars” creators Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni were each assigned individual projects. Additionally, fan-loved characters Lando Calrissian (played by Donald Glover) and Rey Skywalker (Daisy Ridley) will also have their own movies. Furthermore, fresh creative talents like Taika Waititi (“Thor: Ragnarok”) and Patty Jenkins (“Wonder Woman”) are now part of the “Star Wars” family too.
Currently, three projects are still in development: “The Mandalorian & Grogu” (a sequel to the popular Disney+ series “The Mandalorian”), “Dawn of the Jedi”, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s “Star Wars: New Jedi Order”, centered around Rey. It’s rumored that Dave Filoni’s standalone movie and the “Lando” film starring Donald Glover are also being worked on, although there have been no recent updates about these two projects. The “Star Wars” universe is continuing its small-screen adventures, with the upcoming series “Skeleton Crew” set to premiere on Disney+ on December 3, 2024.
