Steve Zahn & Rick Gomez: From On-Screen Rivals to Macaroni Art Prods Pals

In the ’90s acting world of New York, Steve Zahn and Rick Gomez were two stars orbiting around the same sphere. They frequently auditioned for similar roles and mingled in the same social circles. However, while Rick Gomez managed to secure a prominent part in the World War II miniseries “Band of Brothers,” Steve Zahn had to decline due to scheduling conflicts that stopped him from joining his “That Thing You Do” director Tom Hanks once more. Despite these near-misses, they claim they never crossed paths.

Approximately twenty years after their initial encounter, Zahn and Gomez reunited on the series “The Crossing” where Zahn portrayed a sheriff opposite Gomez’s deputy. This science fiction show was brief-lived, only running for a single season on ABC in 2018, but it fostered one of the strongest bonds in both their lives. As Zahn chuckles, he reflects, “We had similar approaches to our work. We were constantly rewriting scripts and pushing for a more exciting product.” Gomez concurs, stating, “We shared a kind of mental connection and have remarkably similar tastes. And when our viewpoints diverged, it was harmonious.

Over time, the bond between Zahn and Gomez strengthened, leading their families to become intertwined as well. Now, they consider each other’s children as part of their extended family.

A few years past, they ventured into a fresh endeavor, launching Macaroni Art Productions. Currently, Zahn manages the operations from Lexington, Kentucky, where he relocated in 2004 to establish his family, and Gomez supervises from his base in northern California. Co-founded by Coby Toland and Jenny Gomez, Mandi Reno holds the position of head of production within this company.

Shortly, Macaroni will premiere its inaugural feature titled “She Dances,” which is set to open at Tribeca in June. While under lockdown conditions, Zahn and Gomez penned the script for this film, and they filmed it with a makeshift crew of friends and relatives in Kentucky (having actors like Ethan Hawke certainly comes in handy). In the director’s chair was Gomez, while Zahn took on the lead role alongside Hawke, Audrey Zahn, Mackenzie Ziegler, Sonequa Martin-Green, and Rosemarie DeWitt. The plot revolves around a father and daughter who must rekindle their bond during a road trip to her final dance competition.

As a gamer, I’m excited to check out the Kentucky-based docuseries titled “You Belong Here,” which delves into the life of Chef Ouita Michel. This series offers an intimate look at memory, legacy, and the transient nature of life across generations. It’s set to premiere at the ATX TV Festival in Austin next month, so mark your calendars!

As a fervent admirer, I can say that this duo is open to filming in various locations, yet they’ve shown a particular interest in Kentucky, which has been aggressively promoting a tax incentive scheme to attract productions. Zahn, in his words, describes the situation as “the wild west.” He adds, “You don’t need a permit to shoot the parkway. It’s like, ‘What? Really?'” – a sentiment that mirrors my own astonishment at this surprising freedom!

Another project they are considering is called “Hot Fruit,” in which Zahn portrays a grieving widower who happens to be a winemaker. He copes with his loss by tending to the first grapes ever planted on a vineyard that he and his late spouse cultivated together. If everything falls into place, Gomez will write the screenplay and take on directing duties.

Despite taking several decades, the duo ended up co-starring on Apple TV+’s “Silo” unexpectedly, and during filming, they lived together in London. As Zahn puts it, “It’s like being in college.

According to Gomez, their journey toward each other was like when all the planets finally lined up – they all lined up eventually.

Macaroni Art is represented by IAG (International Creative Management). Zahn, known for upcoming projects like the Glen Powell Hulu series “Chad Powers” and Sony’s film Anaconda, is managed by UTA (United Talent Agency), Principal Entertainment LA, and imprint. Gomez, with credits in shows like “Justified”, “Ray”, and “Sin City”, is also represented by IAG.
