Story-Driven or Survival Frenzy? Zombie Mode vs. Campaign Mode in Black Ops 6

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Call of Duty’s Zombies mode is nothing short of extraordinary. While the series has always been known for its gripping campaigns and intense multiplayer, it’s the Zombies mode that truly sets it apart.

Without a doubt, one consistent feature in the Call of Duty franchise, apart from exhilarating multiplayer, is the Zombies mode. This mode has been a regular inclusion in many games within the series, with exceptions being Infinity Ward’s Ghosts and Modern Warfare titles.

In a series more known for its gritty, realistic military action (albeit with an impressive level of explosive spectacle), what is the allure of this fantastical style? Could the zombie mode potentially outshine the main campaign?

In the recently launched Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, you’ve got not one but two exciting modes – solo story and Zombies. This makes it an ideal opportunity to discuss Call of Duty’s impressive narrative abilities! It’s worth mentioning that other games in the series also deliver compelling stories, so if you’re curious about what the franchise has to offer, check out the deals on the G2A.COM marketplace. It’ll save you both time and money!

If you’re into first-person shooters, military fiction, and fun co-op CoD is a real treat, and we can prove it!

The art of Call of Duty campaigns

Initially based on World War II themes, the series now primarily focuses on contemporary military and private military operations. For instance, Black Ops 6, set this year, is inspired by the Gulf War and revolves around thwarting a paramilitary group named Prometheus from achieving its objectives.

Call of Duty (CoD) game campaigns usually fall within the high-octane category of military thrillers, featuring numerous intense firefights, thrilling action scenes, and potentially spectacular destruction of structures. Yet, it’s important to note that Call of Duty campaigns generally exclude two elements:

Maintaining a good sense of humor is important. Given that the storylines often revolve around matters of national security and longstanding feuds, it’s crucial to avoid introducing elements that are too humorous or out of place, as they could potentially disrupt the seriousness of the narrative.

What Call of Duty (CoD) campaigns lack is the option for multiplayer, and this makes perfect sense as these campaigns are designed to provide a solo, captivating, dramatic experience. Particularly, some heavily scripted scenes wouldn’t have the same impact if played cooperatively.

You can probably guess where we’re going with this.

The immortal Zombies mode

Zombies were initially introduced in “Call of Duty: World at War” as far back as 2008. The creators at Treyarch, along with those responsible for financing, recognized the potential of this primarily story-driven, somewhat whimsical co-operative mode. Since then, it has been featured in over a dozen different Call of Duty games following CoD: WaW.

It’s a very different experience from both the sour-faced campaigns and the hectic, PvP multiplayer. The Zombies mode is strictly team-based PvE, often done as a wave survival, other times as story-driven missions, but what’s certain, is that it hardly ever is serious. How could it be, if over the years the storylines involved time travel, alternate dimensions, mad scientists, David Hasselhoff being a DJ, and perk-granting soft drinks?

In Black Ops 6, the Zombie mode serves as a follow-up to the one featured in Black Ops: Cold War. Here, the Requiem team is released from their unjust detention by an old adversary, with the aim of taking down a common enemy. The narrative unfolds around dimensional fissures, swarms of zombies, startling transformations, and unexpected plot turns reminiscent of action/sci-fi TV series popular during the late 90s/early 2000s – think shows with elements like dimensions, AI, and zombies. However, unlike some Resident Evil games, this mode features dimension-shifting. It strikes a nice balance between maintaining a serious in-universe tone and embracing the inherent absurdity of a storyline involving dimensions, artificial intelligence, and the undead.

Together forever

A significant aspect of the Zombies mode is its cooperative play, which deviates from using faceless avatars without personality. Instead, it follows in the footsteps of games like Left 4 Dead and Vermintide by assigning you to distinct characters, each with their own motivations and dynamic exchanges that reveal their relationships and personalities.

Engaging in a cooperative game with friends can be similar to having a live-action film marathon, except instead of merely watching, you become an active participant. The plot serves as the backdrop, but there’s little time for snacking on popcorn or other treats. If you don’t focus on the storyline, however, it’s perfectly fine; many players prioritize the gameplay experience. However, if you overlook the unfolding events, the enemies can quickly become challenging to handle.
