Streaming Ratings: ‘Emily in Paris’ Opens Lower With Half-Season Release

As a seasoned gamer and binge-watcher with a soft spot for Netflix originals, I must admit that the recent drop in viewership for Emily in Paris left me quite disheartened. Having devoured every single episode of this delightful dramedy since its debut, I was looking forward to sinking my teeth into the latest season. But alas, it seems that the viewing numbers are not as enthusiastic as they were before.

On August 15, Netflix unveiled the initial portion of the fourth season for Emily in Paris, which attracted fewer viewers compared to the total audience that tuned in for the premiere of its previous full season.

The Lily Collins-led dramedy garnered a total viewing time of 792 million minutes during its debut week in the U.S., according to Nielsen’s streaming data. This placed it third among original series and ninth overall, but it saw a decrease of 43% compared to the 1.39 billion minutes for the initial week of season three, which had all ten episodes instead of just five this time around.

Last week’s most-watched series, Prison Break and The Umbrella Academy, maintained their positions during the week of August 12-18. Interestingly, both shows saw fairly steady viewership. In fact, Prison Break slightly increased its viewership to 1.61 billion minutes (compared to 1.6 billion the previous week), while The Umbrella Academy dipped by roughly 5% with 1.39 billion minutes of viewing time (as compared to 1.46 billion minutes in the preceding week).

In the past 19 weeks, Cartoon series “Bluey” has dropped below the 1-billion-minute mark for the first time since late March, with a total of 996 million minutes viewed. On the other hand, Netflix’s spy movie “The Union” and “Fire Country,” which streams on both Netflix and Paramount+, have surpassed the 1-billion-minute threshold.

Two weeks after House of the Dragon’s season finale, it slipped out of the top 10 acquired shows, but it looks like Game of Thrones is back in business! It racked up a whopping 632 million minutes watched on Max. As for newcomers, Modern Family made its grand entrance into the rankings with an impressive 687 million minutes streamed across Hulu and Peacock. I can’t wait to see what these shows bring next!

Nielsen’s streaming rankings exclusively account for viewing on traditional TV screens and exclude minutes spent streaming on computers or mobile devices. Furthermore, these ratings solely quantify audiences within the United States, excluding viewers from other countries. Here is a list of the most popular streaming titles during August 12-18, 2024, in the U.S. only.
