As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours navigating Middle-earth and beyond, I can’t help but feel a bit nostalgic as I watch the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power unfold on my screen. While the numbers show a slight dip from the first season, it’s important to remember that even the smallest adventure in Middle-earth is still an epic journey.
In the U.S., viewership for the second season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” was substantial, but it didn’t quite match the impressive numbers seen during its debut.
During the week of Aug. 26-Sept. 1, the Prime Video series accumulated a staggering 1.02 billion minutes of viewing time in the United States, placing it at the top among original series and second overall in Nielsen’s streaming rankings for all titles. The second season debuted on Aug. 29 with three episodes, accounting for approximately 70% of the weekly total viewership, while the remaining 30% was attributed to season one. (It is important to note that viewing totals on Nielsen’s charts encompass all episodes of a series.)
Compared to the opening week of Season 1 in August 2022, The Rings of Power has seen a decrease of around 19% in viewership, going from 1.25 billion minutes to 1.02 billion. In terms of U.S. opening weeks for Prime Video series this year, The Rings of Power ranks third, trailing behind Fallout (with 2.9 billion minutes) and The Boys (with 1.19 billion). The second season premiere of Reacher logged 1.69 billion minutes in December 2023.
Approximately 40 million individuals worldwide tuned in to watch the initial three episodes of the season within an eleven-day span; however, these Nielsen ratings encompass merely four days following the release. Additionally, Amazon claims that U.S. viewers make up roughly 30% of the global audience for “The Rings of Power.
For a fourth week running, “Prison Break” reigned supreme as the most-watched title overall with approximately 1.19 billion minutes viewed on Netflix and Hulu. The streaming partnership between AMC and Netflix proved profitable yet again, as four shows – “A Discovery of Witches” (915 million minutes), “Dark Winds” (890 million), “The Walking Dead” (688 million) making its first appearance in the charts after 18 months, and “Preacher” (628 million) – found a spot among the top 10 library series.
In the ranking of most-watched debuts following “The Rings of Power,” Netflix’s “Worst Ex Ever” (with a total watch time of 830 million minutes) claimed the top spot. Debuting on August 29, the Greek mythology series “Kaos” garnered 511 million minutes of viewership. Additionally, Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” (with 460 million minutes watched) reemerged as it began its fourth season.
Nielsen’s streaming statistics account exclusively for viewing on traditional TV screens, excluding minutes spent watching on computers or mobile devices. These ratings solely track American viewers, and do not extend to audiences from other countries. Here’s a list of the most popular streaming titles during Aug. 26-Sept. 1, 2024 in the U.S.
