Sturdy Metal Meets Delicate Floral Forms in Alvaro Ucha Rodriguez’s “Momento” Project

Metals and flowers typically represent contrasting characteristics; one being robust, industrial, and strong while the other is elegant, fragile, and colorful. However, designer Alvaro Ucha Rodriguez, recognized for his creations at NYC’s Lichen shop and design incubator, where he designed items such as the Pitch Pendant Lamp and Puddle Sconce, is bridging this gap with his latest “Momento” initiative.

Ucha Rodriguez characterizes his collection as a “display of his unique artistic flair,” and he emphasizes that he aimed to challenge the common perception of metal as merely a harsh, unyielding, and lifeless substance. This inspired him to produce pieces that embody the antithesis of these qualities, symbolized in this context by a blooming flower.

The principles behind this collection are reflected in its two creations: a seven-inch tall sculpture and a 14-inch wide lampshade. Both items have been crafted in a vibrant red hue and a less vivid stainless steel material. Each item’s design aligns with the ethos it represents: the sculpture showcases flower-inspired red accents and a green base reminiscent of a flower stalk, while the lampshade maintains an entirely unpainted stainless steel structure. Additionally, the lamps are equipped with ceiling hooks for hassle-free installation.

Currently, the complete collection of “Momento” can be purchased directly from Alvaro Ucha Rodriguez’s personal website. The lamps are offered at a price point of $250 USD, while the sculptures retail for $150 USD.
