‘Succession’ Star Arian Moayed to Exec Produce Oscar Contender ‘Motherland’ (Exclusive)

As a gamer and a proud child of immigrants who grew up with my roots deeply entrenched in both Iran and America, I can’t help but be captivated by the powerful narrative that Arian Moayed is helping to bring to life through his executive production of “Motherland.” Having navigated my own journey as an Iranian-American, I find it truly inspiring to see such authentic stories being told on the big screen.

Actor Arian Moayed, who has been recognized by both the Emmys and the Tonys, has agreed to serve as an executive producer for the short film drama titled “Motherland” directed by Jasmin Mozaffari of Iranian-Canadian origin.

Moayed, who was born in Tehran, Iran, moved with his family to the United States when he was just 5 years old. He starred as Stewy Hosseini in HBO’s Succession and has also made appearances on Netflix’s Inventing Anna, HBO Max’s Love Life, and Disney’s Ms. Marvel, among other television roles. Moreover, he boasts an impressive list of theatrical stage credits.

Moayed is working towards securing Oscar nominations for the film “Motherland“, a story that unfolds in 1979 amidst the backdrop of the Iranian hostage crisis. The narrative revolves around Babak, portrayed by Behtash Fazlali, as he embarks on a journey to meet his fiancée’s parents. However, upon arrival in post-Vietnam America, he encounters the harsh realities of life for an Iranian immigrant.

Many Iranians find life outside our homeland progressively challenging due to the persistent issues of misinformation, discrimination, and prejudice, as expressed by Moayed in a statement. The film “Motherland” provides an intimately raw portrayal of the Iranian experience during 1979, exploring themes of love and identity amidst the backdrop of the revolution and hostage crisis. Jasmin Mozaffari has skillfully created a compelling and moving cinematic work that exposes the pain and strength associated with being perceived as an outsider, a feeling shared by many. The response to this film has been profoundly touching, and I am extremely proud to be connected with it.

The Oscar campaign for the movie “Motherland” will feature screenings in New York City and Los Angeles following its success at several prestigious film festivals. These qualifying awards include ‘Best Canadian Short Film’ at the Toronto Film Festival, ‘Best Drama’ at Aspen Shortsfest, as well as ‘Best Live-Action Short Drama’ and ‘Best Performance in a Live-Action Short’ at the Canadian Screen Awards.

Previously, Moayed held the position of executive producer for two films vying for Oscars: Liam LoPinto’s “The Old Young Crow” and Sierra Urich’s “Joonam”. Additionally, the cast includes John Ralston, Niaz Salimi, Nima Gholamipour, and Birgitte Solem in “Motherland”.

In the gaming world, it’s me (alongside Taj Critchlow, Arsalan Asli, Amir Karimi, Dean Rosen, and Fuliane Petikyan) who share the executive producer credits. Caitlin Grabham, Priscilla Galvez, and Mozaffari are the ones leading the charge as producers on this project.
