A blowout on the field didn’t deter a record number of viewers from watching Super Bowl LIX.
The preliminary viewership data shows that Sunday’s Super Bowl telecast on Fox attracted an average of 126 million viewers across all channels. If this number remains consistent, it would mark the second consecutive year that the Super Bowl breaks its own U.S. viewing record. At present, the game is seeing a slight increase of around 2% compared to last year’s record-breaking viewership of 123.7 million on CBS (contributing approximately 120.25 million of those viewers) and other platforms.
Additionally, Fox reported that the game surpassed the prior Super Bowl streaming record. On their free platform, Tubi, it attracted 13.6 million viewers, and when combined with NFL digital platforms, a total of 14.5 million viewers tuned in. The previous high for streaming was approximately 11.2 million viewers back in 2022.
If these figures are accurate, the main show on Fox could see a decrease compared to last year. Last year’s game attracted 120.25 million viewers on CBS. However, the increase in streaming has compensated for this potential decline.
It appears the one-sided outcome of the game didn’t seem to affect the TV viewers. Despite the Philadelphia Eagles defeating the Kansas City Chiefs with a scoreline of 40-22, the match was actually far more lopsided than that score might suggest. By the end of the third quarter, the Eagles had already built an impressive lead of 34-0, and it wasn’t until the final three minutes of the game that Kansas City managed to score twice, making the final tally appear closer than the reality of the match.
During the game’s second quarter, at 8-8:15 p.m. ET, when the Eagles were establishing a 24-0 lead, viewership peaked at an impressive 135.7 million. It seemed that viewers were captivated not just by the game itself, but also by Kendrick Lamar’s halftime performance. His Grammy-winning song “Not Like Us,” which is famously associated with Drake’s beef, was a part of this spectacular show. The second half of the game followed, keeping viewers engaged until the end.
Apart from the primary broadcast on Fox and live streaming on Tubi, Telemundo aired the Spanish version of the game. Detailed insights about the viewership on each platform will be disclosed on Tuesday.
