As a die-hard gamer who grew up with Mario as my virtual best friend, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia whenever I hear about the sequel to the Super Mario Bros. Movie. Keegan-Michael Key’s teaser about deep cut Easter eggs and new characters has me scratching my head in anticipation!
Currently, Keegan-Michael Key is lending his voice to Bumblebee in the latest Transformers film. However, not so long ago, he was the vocal talent behind Toad in the blockbuster Super Mario Bros. animation.
A follow-up is being developed, though Illumination Entertainment hasn’t made any formal announcements yet. However, some hints have been dropped by the creators regarding what we might see and how they aim to broaden the storyline beyond the Mushroom Kingdom.
Expect Some Deep Cut Easter Eggs in Super Mario 2
In an interview with Men’s Journal, Key elaborated a tad on how the upcoming Super Mario sequel would build upon the universe established in the initial film. According to Key, the sequel aims to delve deeper into that world.
The second film stands out with a wider range of subject matter, setting it in an interestingly rich Mario universe. It promises to uncover some amazing hidden references, or ‘Easter eggs’, and the experience has been quite thrilling up until now.
Although he didn’t mention specific characters, Key hinted that “The universe these characters inhabit has been expanded significantly. We’ll encounter new faces, some of whom are cherished classics and others that I believe are quite obscure. However, due to the current narrative structure, these characters will be particularly intriguing.

Before Nintendo or Illumination officially unveil anything, enthusiasts are left to ponder, and with Key’s remarks, there’s a great deal of curiosity swirling around potential characters that might make an appearance.
Might Yoshi play a more substantial role in the upcoming sequel? And what about other characters from the Mario universe, such as Daisy and King Boo? There’s definitely anticipation among fans for a potential showdown between Mario, Luigi, and their rivals Wario and Waluigi after Bowser.

Easter Eggs in the First Mario Movie
In the initial Super Mario film adaptation, they skillfully packed in numerous references from the game series. Not only did it present well-known characters such as Bowser, Peach, and Toad, but it also wove in iconic stages like those of Super Mario, featured Cat Mario, and even hinted at aspects from Luigi’s Mansion.
Additionally, the filmmakers skillfully incorporated elements from Donkey Kong, even including a scene that echoes Mario’s debut in the original Donkey Kong game, complete with barrels and floating platforms.
They also managed to blend aspects of Mario Kart, featuring iconic elements like the Rainbow Road and turtle shell projectiles.

What could be in Super Mario 2?
The sequel’s direction remains unclear at this point, but if it follows in the footsteps of the initial film, viewers can anticipate additional game elements appearing on the big screen. Given the rich history and diverse characters spanning over decades of Super Mario, this shouldn’t pose much of a challenge for Illumination.
Could it be that this time, perhaps Bowser could be more amicable and friendly instead? And as for the possibility of collaborations, might it still be a bit premature to explore crossovers with other Nintendo titles such as Kirby or The Legend of Zelda?
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m just as excited as you are about the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel! However, Nintendo hasn’t given us any official details yet, so all we can do is patiently wait for the big reveal. From what I’ve heard, there’s a strong possibility that we might see it premiere in 2026, but until then, let’s keep our fingers crossed!
