As a movie critic with a lifelong love for superheroes and a knack for deciphering the intricacies of on-screen costumes, I can confidently say that Isabela Merced‘s portrayal of Hawkgirl in James Gunn’s DC Universe is shaping up to be a visual feast for fans. The actress’s enthusiasm for her character’s helmet, which she calls “so sick” and “badass,” is palpable and infectious.
In the year 2025, Isabela Merced, starring alongside Superman in an upcoming DC Universe film, finds Hawkgirl’s “badass” suit to be incredibly cool. Known for her roles in Sicario: Day of the Soldado, Turtles All the Way Down, Madame Web, and Alien: Romulus, Merced is currently busy promoting her latest success on the press tour for Alien: Romulus. When asked about Hawkgirl during an interview with Deadline, she couldn’t help but express her admiration for the character’s costume. Here’s what she said:
“Well, there have been some leaked pictures online.
However, I think James knows what he wants, and this specific suit is for this specific timeline in the story.
I don’t know what else I can say, but I gotta say, the helmet was my absolute favorite.
It’s so sick. It’s so badass. It’s perfect.”
In July 2023, it was announced that Merced will star as a winged Thanagarian superhero armed with a mace. This character will join forces with Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific and Nathan Fillion’s Green Lantern/Guy Gardner in James Gunn’s initial film adaptation of the DC Universe, titled Superman.
Hawkgirl, originally known as Shiera Sanders before her marriage to Carter Hall, is one of the earliest superheroes, debuting in the very first issue of Flash Comics, all the way back in 1940. This historic comic book, a Golden Age classic, was also the birthplace for Jay Garrick’s Flash, Hawkman, and Johnny Thunder.
Isabela Merced Discusses Playing Marvel & DC Superheroes
Isabela Merced enthusiastically embraced every opportunity to wear Hawkgirl’s remarkable costume for James Gunn’s upcoming Superman project, and though she may gain more favorable fan responses following her role in the first DCU adventure with Man of Steel, Merced can’t help but acknowledge that she was part of one of Sony and Marvel’s less successful superhero collaborations, Madame Web. However, the actress who played Anya Corazon, or Spider-Girl, has accepted the film’s poor performance. During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Merced admitted:
“Every actor I adore seems to have a film that makes me exclaim, ‘Oh, this is so over-the-top, it’s hilarious!’ There was a lot of laughter in our group chat after the movie came out, as we shared tweets and created memes. However, it also leaves a bittersweet taste because I know there were people who put in a great deal of effort on that project, perhaps seeing it as their chance for a major break.”
Merced continued:
“I find myself reflecting on those who have given their best efforts. Currently, I have alternative paths available to me, which is something I’m grateful for. However, it saddens me to think about those who have invested so much into this endeavor, as there seems to be a great number of people involved, making progress difficult.”
So, even though you might mean well, somebody else might not understand the assignment.”
A multitude of images showing Merced alongside her fellow “Superman” cast members in their costume attire can be easily found online. The actress playing Hawkgirl has already expressed her enthusiasm for her on-screen crime fighting partners. Interestingly, Merced also confided in Josh Horowitz from “Happy Sad Confused” that she is thrilled and eager for viewers to witness Nathan Fillion’s portrayal of Green Lantern.
In July 2025, when “Superman” premieres, Isabela Merced’s portrayal of Hawkgirl will soar to life.
