The shared vision of and Peter Safran for the DCU made significant progress this week, as they unveiled amended plans for the franchise’s short-term and long-term trajectory. In the course of these revelations, fans received some mixed news concerning the production of the horror-focused film, which appears to be inexplicably delayed…yet it seems this delay is for a positive purpose.
Initially, when Gunn unveiled the first batch of DC Universe projects, it contained a few unexpected titles and hinted at additional announcements in the future. Now, two years later, the DCU is set to begin its live-action journey this summer with the release of Superman. However, due to the dynamic nature of comic book movies, some adjustments have been made to other projects as Gunn and Safran have had to revise their original plan.
The most recent annual update has resulted in several projects being delayed until the perfect script is discovered. In the case of “Swamp Thing,” it seems that the film’s director may be the source of the delay. Originally, the director tapped for the movie was known for films like “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” and “A Complete Unknown,” but according to Safran, the director has shifted focus towards a Bob Dylan biography instead of “Swamp Thing.” However, it appears that Mangold is the preferred choice for the job, and they are willing to wait as long as necessary to secure him for the movie. As Safran stated:
The director/writer of Swamp Thing has temporarily moved on to work on another small project called A Complete Unknown. We eagerly anticipate his return to Swamp Thing when he feels ready, as we deeply appreciate him as a filmmaker and are patiently waiting for his creative vision. It’s worth noting that Swamp Thing is not a crucial element in the broader storyline we are developing.
‘Swamp Thing’ Looks Set To Stand Alone in the DCU
When James Gunn unveiled the DC Universe (DCU) lineup of films, it appeared that projects like Superman, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, The Authority, and the Wonder Woman prequel series Paradise Lost would all be connected within the DCU continuity much like how Marvel Studios handles its movies. But as more details have emerged, it’s become apparent that Gunn and Safran’s comic book universe won’t necessarily follow a straight line or have every project tightly interconnected.
Despite labeling Elseworlds projects as separate entities from the main universe, like Matt Reeves’ Batman series, it appears that productions such as Swamp Thing might not necessarily share a strong connection with other films and shows such as Superman. Given its existing superhero content, Superman doesn’t seem to need additional characters tying it together.
The unanticipated Clayface film, which is horror-themed and part of DC’s movie lineup, indicates that there could be various elements shaping the DC cinematic universe in the future. Fans will just need to stay tuned to discover which tales fit into the broader narrative and which ones serve as standalone entertainment.
Gunn’s experience working with Marvel Studios may have given him a unique perspective on how to steer clear of some of the same issues that have challenged the other major comic book franchise, as many people have criticized Marvel’s productions for their tightly interconnected universe.
