For several years now, director Taika Waititi has been connected to an unnamed Star Wars project. With a global pandemic passing and industry-wide strikes temporarily halting Hollywood productions for nearly a year, not a single Star Wars film has been released since Waititi’s hiring. While Lucasfilm certainly bears some responsibility due to the frequent turnover of filmmakers coming and going from their studio, it appears that Waititi himself contributes to the delay in his Star Wars movie being produced, as it remains in scripting phase with an uncertain timeline.
In a chat with Deadline, Kathleen Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm, talked about several aspects regarding the future of the Star Wars universe. One of the projects she mentioned was Taika Waititi’s upcoming film, which unfortunately doesn’t have a script written yet. This is quite inconvenient given that he has been connected to this project since 2020. Kennedy was full of praise for Waititi, but admitted that scheduling him has been difficult, despite the promising developments she’s observed in the screenplay so far.
Taika is currently collaborating with another writer, which means he’s really swamped. I admire him greatly, and I believe that if we eventually receive a script from him, it will be exceptional. In fact, I’ve already had a sneak peek at the first act, and it was terrific. However, coordinating with him can sometimes be challenging.
