As a devoted fan of gripping storytelling and exceptional character development, I find myself utterly captivated by the audacious journey embarked upon by Ian McCulloch with his latest creation, “Teacup”. It’s not every day that we witness a screenwriter taking such a bold step in stripping down the source material to its very essence, much like Radiohead might do with their songs.
Few new streaming series have generated as much buzz and controversy as Ian McCulloch’s (Yellowstone, Chicago Fire) Teacup. This chilling horror thriller on Peacock is loosely based on Robert McCammon’s bestselling book, Stinger. However, the show significantly alters the original’s setting, storyline, and characters, resulting in a completely unique production, with only its horror and mystery remaining intact.
During a recent conversation with MovieWeb, McCulloch shared that when acclaimed filmmaker James Wan (known for movies like Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring), who serves as one of the show’s executive producers, presented him Robert McCammon’s book, he read it quickly, despite finding it massive. He went on to say that he thought Stinger was a large-scale novel.
In this story, there are many characters and an entire town facing a siege, complete with grand scenes. It’s a massive, bombastic epic. However, I don’t typically shine in crafting such large-scale epics. Instead, I excel at creating intimate, character-driven pieces. So, the plan was to take this expansive concept and strip it down, removing all the explosions and numerous characters, leaving behind a small, focused story.
McCulloch added:
We kept the concept of the book, but we brought it down to ground level and made something which we’re calling a ‘keyhole epic,’ meaning a very large story but told through a very small lens.
Stripping Stinger Down to Its Core
The captivating series tracks a disparate group of rural Georgians who are forced to unite as a mysterious threat rattles their lives. Starring Yvonne Strahovski (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Scott Speedman (Grey’s Anatomy), the show also stars Chaske Spencer, Kathy Baker, Boris McGiver, Caleb Dolden, Emilie Bierre, Luciano Leroux, and Rob Morgan as McNab, a gas mask-wearing antagonist.
McCulloch, a key figure in the production of the popular Paramount+ series “Yellowstone,” generously fills “Teacup” with a rich mix of horror, mystery, suspense, and compelling narratives. When asked about condensing the source material to its essential horror elements, he commented:
The concept was that if you remove every element from a Radiohead or U2 track, like all the instrumentation, production effects, and various instruments… Leaving just one person strumming a guitar and singing the song. If it retains its effectiveness, then it’s a fantastic tune, and that’s what we were interested in exploring.
Ian McCulloch Had to Write the Perfect Script or the Show Wouldn’t Have Been Made
McCulloch decided to test the effectiveness of the bestselling book by stripping it down to its basic elements, wondering if it would still be successful without all the extra details. In his opinion, it does work quite well, which is a testament to the book’s quality. However, this was a risky move because Robert McCammon might have argued that it wasn’t like his novel “Stinger.
McCullough also mentioned that he had shared crucial information with McCammon right from the start. “I told him, ‘Here’s the plan: I’m going to draft a script. If you don’t approve of it, we won’t proceed with production. But this is what I intend to create.’ To their credit, they responded, ‘This sounds intriguing. Let’s see where we can take it.'” The fruits of their collaboration can be enjoyed when Teacup streams on Peacock October 10, with two fresh episodes arriving every week leading up to Halloween.
