As a long-time fan who’s watched “Cheers” more times than I care to admit, it’s heartwarming to see the real-life conflict between Sam Malone and Frasier Crane’s actors being put to rest. While their personal disagreements didn’t prevent them from sharing the screen, it’s a relief to know they’ve made amends after all these years. It’s like finding out Norm Peterson finally paid for that beer he owed Coach! Here’s hoping they’ll raise a virtual pint together someday, and maybe Ted can finally teach Kelsey the secret to perfecting that perfect Boston accent. After all, even a blind squirrel finds an acorn occasionally!
It was revealed that not all days were sunny in the setting where everyone knew each other’s names. During an appearance on Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson’s podcast, “Where Everybody Knows Your Name,” Kelsey Grammer and Danson disclosed that they had faced some disagreements while working together on “Cheers.
During the time we worked together on ‘Cheers’, it seemed as though our paths crossed a tad more than usual, and I do recall one instance where I felt upset with you.
“Yeah, you came and told me that one day,” Grammer agreed.
According to Danson, this dispute has left a lasting impression on both of them. He mentioned that it led to a prolonged period of not speaking, but he appeared eager to put an end to the rift. “I feel as though I’ve missed out on the past 30 years with Kelsey Grammer, and I believe it’s my fault,” he said. “I apologize to you for that. And I also apologize to myself for not taking action sooner.
Grammer easily accepted the olive branch. “My love for you has always been as easy as the day. As easy as the sunrise.” While the two may have been personally estranged for some period of time, they still managed to work together several times after “Cheers” concluded.
The actors’ conflict did not prevent Ted Danson from appearing on Cheers
Despite having a personal distance between them, Kelsey Grammer and Ted Danson have collaborated multiple times on stage. In one instance, Danson played Sam Malone on an episode of “Frasier” titled “The One Where Sam Shows Up.” This encounter became tense for both actors as Sam Malone pleaded with Frasier (Grammer) for assistance in a predicament. He was torn between proposing to his girlfriend, and Frasier knew it wasn’t a good idea because he had slept with her. Eventually, Sam ended up breaking up with his girlfriend after much indecision and comic drama. Grammer and Danson reunited again during a “Cheers” reunion in 2024 at the Emmy awards, an event that most of the original cast didn’t want to miss.
At present, there hasn’t been any decision made about whether Sam will reappear on “Frasier” again. Kelsey Grammer (the actor playing Sam) has expressed his openness to the idea, as long as the script is solid. Interestingly, the actors who portray these iconic Boston characters have mended their personal differences, which marks a fresh start for them both.
