As a devoted admirer of Macaulay Culkin and his illustrious career, I find myself enamored by the whimsical idea of him reacquiring the iconic Home Alone house. The very thought of it being transformed into a movie funhouse for fans to relive their favorite scenes is an absolute dream come true.
Known as one of the greatest Christmas films ever produced, “Home Alone” introduced audiences to an unforgettable character from the ’90s cinema era – Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin McCallister. The movie also showcased a fantastic location – a roomy suburban Chicago house that Kevin vowed to safeguard. Although we might never learn if the McCallister family lived in the residence after “Home Alone 2“, Culkin has discussed purchasing the house, and his proposed ideas for it are classic Macaulay Culkin style.
At a live event called “A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin” in Rosemont, Illinois, during December 2024 (as reported by the New York Times), the former child star showcased the classic Chris Columbus film and regaled the audience with various anecdotes. Alongside reminiscing about his time spent working with fellow “Home Alone” cast members, Culkin disclosed his near purchase of the renowned house located at 671 Lincoln Ave., Winnetka, Illinois. In his own words:
I had half a mind to buy it — just for giggles.
As I attended the post-screening Q&A, Macaulay Culkin, starring in “Fallout” Season 2, received a warm applause when he shared his unique story about owning the very house where his iconic character from the ’90s movies supposedly made his family vanish. Yet, hearing his imaginative ideas for refurbishing this grand residence stirred excitement in me, as a fan, imagining what could be a fascinating tribute to those beloved films.
What Macaulay Culkin Would Do With The Home Alone House And Why I Need It To Happen Now
If Macaulay Culkin were to purchase a house, it’s intriguing to ponder how he might use it. Interestingly enough, he has expressed the idea of transforming it into a film-themed funhouse, where visitors could relive iconic scenes from Home Alone, such as sledding down the stairs. This fascinating concept was shared during one of his traveling events. (Rest assured, there would be no actual hot doorknob grabbing.)
Visiting a museum-like attraction based on the iconic Home Alone house from the movie is an appealing prospect for both cinephiles and residents of the Midwest, especially if it could be restored to its original appearance from back then. The den with its comfy chair, the kitchen featuring the little TV and tile countertops, and the location where all those clever traps were set up would surely bring joy to revisit.
But don’t get too attached to the idea of taking a zipline from the third floor to a treehouse out back, yelling at the furnace to shut up, or taking shots at sports figures sitting on the laundry chute, even though a $5.25 million sale of the home isn’t yet finalized, per Zillow.
At the same gathering, Culkin shared that his prioritized commitments as a father were the cause for not following through on those proposed arrangements. Ultimately, his family responsibilities were the deciding factor.
While it’s enticing to imagine that Culkin could be the secret purchaser of the Home Alone house, history tells us that stranger events have taken place during previous holiday seasons.
Although we might not personally step inside the house nor witness Macaulay Culkin’s transformation of it, we can revisit that very house by enjoying the movie “Home Alone” again and again through our Disney+ membership.
