As a devoted follower of The Bear, I must confess that my heart skipped a beat when it missed out on the Best Comedy Series and Best Actress awards at this year’s Emmys. However, watching Jeremy Allen White’s emotional acceptance speech for Best Actor made me realize that The Bear has indeed changed lives, including mine. It has instilled in me a newfound faith that change is possible, and it has reminded me that I am never truly alone in my love for great storytelling.
FX’s hit series, “The Bear,” was poised to create another stir at this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, following its triumph in the same category last year. With an impressive 76th Primetime Emmys tally, it had earned more nominations than any other comedy series in a single year. The show secured three out of four acting awards in the comedy category, with Ebon Moss-Bachrach taking home Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, Liza Colón-Zayas winning Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, and Jeremy Allen White being crowned Best Actor in a Comedy Series. However, it fell short in the Best Actress in a Comedy Series category to Jean Smart of “Hacks,” who claimed her sixth Emmy win in this category. Additionally, “The Bear” lost the Best Comedy Series award to “Hacks.
In a turn of events, The Bear didn’t completely sweep the Emmys as it did in its first season, with Hacks snatching the award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, while The Bear took home the honor for Outstanding Direction in a Comedy Series by Christopher Storer. Despite this, it still managed to secure awards for Best Direction and individual actors, Jeremy Allen White (Best Actor) and Ayo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Best Supporting Actors).
In his acceptance speech, Jeremy Allen White expressed gratitude towards his sister, his cast members, and the other Emmy nominees, adding:
This program has made a profound impact on me. It has instilled in me the belief that change can occur, and that it can happen when one is open to connecting with others. I am deeply grateful for this show.
FX’s hit show “The Bear” had already made a strong impact at the Creative Arts Emmys, which took place a weekend before the Primetime Awards. In these ceremonies, Jon Bernthal and Jamie Lee Curtis each won for Best Guest Actor and Actress in a Comedy Series respectively. Other notable contenders for the same category in “The Bear’s” second season were Will Poulter, Bob Odenkirk, and Olivia Coleman.
Will The Bear Season 3 Achieve Similar Success?
The debut season of “The Bear” has established a formidable benchmark for future installments of FX’s popular culinary drama. It delves into the lives of the Berzatto family and the crew at The Original Beef of Chicagoland sandwich shop, who are all grappling with the demise of Mikey Berzatto (Bernthal). The narrative focuses on Carmy (White), Mikey’s younger brother, as he strives to rescue the restaurant. Remarkably, Season 1 secured a perfect score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with Season 2 trailing closely with 99%. However, there is some debate among fans as to which of the first two seasons takes the lead in terms of quality.
It seems that most fans can find common ground in their perception that Season 3 is not as strong as its predecessors. Instead of advancing Carmy’s journey of coping with grief and mending family ties, this season placed a greater emphasis on characters from The Bear restaurant. Characters like Tina (Liza Colón-Zayas) and Natalie (Abby Elliott) each got their own episodes, delving into their unique situations, while the Fak family, who some might find mentally taxing, were given more screen time than desired in several episodes. While there are those who praise Season 3 (the first episode is widely admired and could be a topic of heated discussion), it’s less likely to maintain the series’ winning streak at the Emmys for a third consecutive year.
