As a gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in political simulations and strategy games, it’s fascinating to see real-life politics mirroring the narrative of fictional shows like The Diplomat. It’s almost as if I’ve been living two parallel lives – one in the digital world and another in our tangible reality.
As a devoted admirer, I find myself in a unique position reflecting upon our nation’s leadership transition. Our president, advancing in years, had prepared to hand over the reins to his youthful vice president, a woman who embodies hope and change. However, an unforeseen event has thrown these plans into turmoil, leaving the White House in a race against time to find a suitable replacement that will carry on our commander-in-chief’s esteemed legacy.
In Netflix’s fictional Washington, depicted in the political series The Diplomat, it is revealed that the show’s vice president, Grace Penn (played by Allison Janney in season 2, premiering this Thursday), is involved in a scandal which allegedly will lead to her resignation. Meanwhile, White House aides are covertly considering Keri Russell’s character, Kate Wyler, a career diplomat who has just been appointed as the American ambassador to the U.K., as a possible replacement for Penn.
Although the circumstances surrounding the succession in ‘The Diplomat’ differ greatly from the real-world political drama unfolding this summer, some viewers might have been drawn to compare it with the U.S. presidency situation. With the 82-year-old Joe Biden anticipated to hand over power to his younger, female vice president Kamala Harris, and facing mounting pressure to abandon his 2024 reelection plans following a poor showing in the first debate against Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, it’s easy to see why such comparisons could be made.
Eventually, after first vowing to continue his campaign, Biden later decided to step down unexpectedly in mid-July. He then handed over the mantle to Harris, thus concluding his own presidential bid and offering his support for her as his chosen replacement.
Currently, everyone’s attention is focused on the Vice President, as Vice President Harris has been nominated for the Democratic presidency, and Penn plays a significant role in the second season of the Netflix show “The Diplomat.
The sequence of events, as shared by showrunner Debora Cahn with The Hollywood Reporter, occurred “unintentionally” or “by accident.
Cahn explains that while the show’s power struggle resembles real-life politics, he didn’t intend to create a mirror image. They were dealing with similar themes when creating the story two years ago, but their intention was not to duplicate the exact situation. Instead, they aimed to be in the same general area – not the same house. However, events unfolded in such a way that the show inadvertently found itself sharing some similarities as the real-life drama played out on the news.
Cahn finds it somewhat unsettling how events depicted on the program mirrored real-life occurrences.
She notes that we’re discussing a broader context involving certain matters, yet not necessarily a particular incident. However, an interesting coincidence occurred – we filmed a scene featuring the character [Kate, as depicted in the main image above], wearing a powder blue suit, and just two days later, Kamala Harris was spotted at a rally in Georgia donning the same shade.
She adds, “It all all looks much more deliberately in dialogue than it actually was.”
When questioned about similarities in the political climate depicted on the show and real-life politics, Michael McKean, who portrays President Rayburn in The Diplomat, found it intriguing yet stressed the distinctiveness between the two spheres.
In simpler terms, when there was talk about Biden handing over leadership this summer, it felt charming but distant. It’s intriguing, he recently said during the season two premiere of THR in New York. “We still can’t predict the future. There are few similarities and many long-shot possibilities in this political landscape,” he explained.
Apart from Penn, a character who was extensively talked about but not shown in the initial season, the second season of The Diplomat delves into the consequences stemming from the season-one explosion, which appeared to impact both Kate’s husband and former ambassador Hal (Rufus Sewell), as well as her associate Stuart (Ato Essandoh). Furthermore, during this new season, Kate and her team pursue their hypothesis that the British government could be responsible for the attack on their own vessel that initiated the series.
