‘The Fire Inside’ Athlete Claressa Shields Shares Thoughts on Her Biopic

As a die-hard fan of sports biopics and a fervent admirer of Claressa Shields, I am absolutely thrilled about the release of “The Fire Inside.” This movie is not just another sports drama; it’s a testament to resilience, passion, and the indomitable spirit that defines Claressa Shields.

Currently, sports biopics are all the rage, with fresh releases gracing cinema screens – among them, “Unstoppable,” focusing on male wrestling, and this week’s release of “The Fire Inside,” which highlights female boxing. The latter is penned by Academy Award-winning writer Barry Jenkins and delves into the challenging path of actual fighter Claressa Shields, a two-time gold medalist. Originating from Flint, Michigan, this inspiring boxer now has a biopic that recounts her arduous journey to global fame. In the movie, Ryan Destiny and Brian Tyree Henry take on the leading roles.

As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I had the privilege of sitting down with Katie Shedls in sunny Los Angeles. MovieWeb was there to uncover her role as an Executive Producer for this film that revolves around her life story. The timing of this biopic is particularly striking, especially when you compare it to other renowned boxing movies that have graced our screens throughout the decades. Katie shares her thoughts: “You know, we’ve all seen the Rockys and Creeds, but they are more like fiction. When it comes to real-life stories, I believe the Muhammad Ali biopic is one of those that truly resonates with authenticity, giving us a glimpse into everything that transpired.” She continues:

“I believe what sets this apart is my ongoing activity. Currently, I hold the top spot globally. I have a boxing event scheduled for February 2 in Flint, which marks my return home. I genuinely feel that this film, with its raw authenticity, has the potential to reshape the world due to its realness and my age at the time of production – only 29 years old. Receiving a biopic at such a young age is quite extraordinary… Often, I find myself reflecting on how unimaginable this journey seemed when it first began.

“My Persona Is a Misconception”

Additionally, it’s worth considering that followers of Shields, particularly boxing enthusiasts, may already be familiar with her off-ring achievements due to her multiple Olympic participations. Consequently, Shields shared insights about what else her book, The Fire Inside, uniquely uncovers for fans – aspects they might not have learned from following her life story through mainstream media.

In a nutshell, “The Fire Inside” seems to encapsulate everything in one go, and often it’s the unnoticed aspects that hold the key. People tend to focus on the glamour, flashiness, and sparkle, but they overlook the gritty reality. I believe my image might not always align with people’s perceptions. They may label me as arrogant or cocky, but what I really am is confident and passionate. The right words to describe me can be found in this film, and then you’ll understand that boxing was all I had during that time.

As a professional in a field dominated by men, my enthusiasm for what I do was initially unexpected. However, it’s not about trying to be like a man or being angry, or even wanting to compete with them. It’s simply about earning the respect I deserve as a woman who is passionate about her craft and loves boxing deeply. Fans may not know this yet, but I am full of personality, and over time, you’ll get to see that side of me too.

From Amazon MGM Studios, The Fire Inside was released in theaters nationwide on Christmas Day.
