As a seasoned gamer of the Bachelor Nation for over a decade now, I can’t help but feel a sense of déjà vu as yet another high-profile couple’s fairytale turns sour just months after tying the knot. The story of Theresa Nist and Gerry Turner is all too familiar to us fans, with their quick courtship, hasty wedding, and even swifter divorce echoing a string of broken relationships that seem to follow the show like a shadow.
As a dedicated fan of “The Golden Bachelorette,” I must admit that the excitement of the show’s debut in 2024 was quickly dampened when Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist tied the knot live on a January special, only to announce their divorce less than four months later. Now, Theresa is opening up about what went wrong, and it underscores an issue I believe “Bachelor Nation” needs to confront: the importance of location in finding lasting love.
The ABC show seems to persistently presume that couples won’t encounter difficulties traveling across the U.S. after being paired up. However, it’s evident from past seasons that this assumption has faltered on several occasions. Nist recently discussed her experience with Gerry Turner on “The Ben And Ashley I Almost Famous Podcast.” She expressed that asking people, particularly seniors, to relocate geographically when they have children and grandkids is a significant challenge, a sentiment that resonates strongly with my own thoughts regarding the series. Here’s an excerpt from her statement:
spending six weeks in Charleston and six weeks at our current location. truthfully, I yearned for us to have our home united.
The couple, represented by Nist, found it wasn’t only about the location that caused tension; rather, they struggled to find common ground in managing their shared living arrangement as a married couple. This disagreement, unfortunately, played a part in their separation. Gerry Turner resides in his cherished house on Big Long Lake, Indiana, which he purchased with his late wife and long-time sweetheart, shortly before she fell ill and passed away a month after the home purchase. Furthermore, Turner is a father of two daughters and a grandfather to two granddaughters.
Contrarily, Theresa Nist settled in Shrewsbury, New Jersey following the birth of her two children and six grandchildren. Moving to North Carolina with the intention of being nearer to her son and constructing a home exclusively theirs didn’t come to fruition. It’s intriguing to ponder if Gerry could have experienced a happier conclusion if more of his potential suitors had been residents of Indiana instead. As she went on:
As a gamer, I was yearning for a change in scenery. The dream was to create a cozy haven where our loved ones could join us without the constant back-and-forth. Establishing a permanent base with Gerry was what I envisioned, and then we’d take turns visiting our kids. That was my vision, as that’s what we had agreed upon. Truth be told, he cherishes his current abode, and honestly, I can’t fault him for it. If this is the path he chooses, then let him find happiness there.
During their podcast discussion, co-hosted by Ben Higgins from The Bachelor Season 20 and Ashley Iaconetti of Bachelor In Paradise, Theresa emphasized that it’s nearly impossible to truly understand someone in just four weeks. She shared an interesting story about a misunderstanding that occurred when she mistakenly assumed some land was suitable for townhouse construction, only to discover later it was farmland, leading to a series of challenging conversations.
After their separation, Theresa and Gerry have now officially ended their marriage through a divorce. Despite their high-profile split, Theresa has expressed that she still supports Gerry wholeheartedly and remains by his side in spirit. In her own words, “I’m still cheering for him and standing by his side.
Initially, I had believed it would endure indefinitely, but as it turns out, age doesn’t guarantee all-encompassing wisdom. Occasionally, events deviate from our expectations, and that’s perfectly fine.
In my opinion, the newly revealed facts make it clear that the upcoming seasons of The Bachelor should focus on casting contestants regionally instead of nationwide. While true love can overcome many obstacles, asking individuals, particularly seniors, to move away from their roots and sacrifice significant amounts of time with loved ones could lead to difficulties in their relationships. It appears that Gerry and Theresa found it challenging to sell their homes and start a new life together, and I understand why they felt that way!
With each passing day, I find myself wondering if Joan Vassos will manage to find harmony with her chosen one as The Golden Bachelorette’s grand finale approaches. Tune in tonight to catch the latest installment on ABC!
