The Greatest Thing About Working On SpongeBob SquarePants, According To The Cast Who Have Done It For 25 Years

If you were raised watching “SpongeBob SquarePants“, then you’re well aware of the significant impact this series had on our formative years. From the outset, the gifted voice artists, including Mr. Lawrence and Jill Talley (the voices of Plankton and Karen respectively), have been an integral part of the show. Recently, they’ve opened up about what has kept them enthusiastic about working on the show for a remarkable 25 years.

To celebrate the upcoming release of “Plankton: The Movie” scheduled for Netflix subscribers in 2025, I was fortunate enough to interview the long-term voice actors behind Plankton and Karen about their experiences working on this series, which is soon turning 26 years old. Jill Talley shared a touching sentiment, expressing that one of the best aspects of working together for so long is their genuine friendship off-screen as well.

In my perspective, what truly sets SpongeBob apart, beyond its countless charms, is the lasting camaraderie it has fostered among us for an impressive 25 years. I can confidently say that each member of this team is not just a colleague, but a friend. There’s no denying, it’s truly a remarkable group with no weak links to be found.

I concured, chuckling as I pointed out the uncanny coincidence that has turned our lives into a recurring sequence of “serendipitous encounters,” often at events such as supporting L.A. firefighters. It’s almost like running into colleagues at the supermarket, I added.

It’s quite astonishing, particularly the firehouse episode. We’ve been anticipating visitors, and there was this small fire station where we went to express our gratitude to the firefighters for their efforts during the fires and meet their children. As we wandered around, it was like running into Rodger [Bumpass] – completely unexpected yet fitting, as if our lives are intertwining intentionally due to our shared work. It’s as though we were just running into each other at a local store, pleased to make the acquaintance.

For those unaware, Bumpass provides the voice for Squidward and has been sharing the screen with Mr. Lawrence since the show debuted. The actor who voices Plankton shared a nostalgic moment, stating that it’s always fantastic to attend Comic-Con as a cast because there’s an unusual “energy” in the atmosphere that you won’t find anywhere else when they’re all together.

There’s an energetic vibe as well. For instance, during activities such as Comic-Con, you can sense it. It’s this wonderful electric energy from us being together in one place at the same time. I think that’s really charming and exciting when we’re all gathered, don’t you agree?

Having grown up watching some of the finest episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants and witnessing its development over the past few decades, it’s heartening to listen to Mr. Lawrence and Talley reminisce about their experiences. They were a big part of my childhood, and seeing them interact in reality just makes me feel even more fondly towards them.

The popular cartoon series “SpongeBob SquarePants” continues to captivate viewers even now, long after its initial episodes were first aired. Despite certain past episodes being taken down from streaming services due to modern television standards, it remains a cherished program for numerous individuals.

It’s evident that it has a significant social influence. In fact, even Robert Eggers, director of “Nosferatu,” acknowledged the influential Nickelodeon show for reintroducing my generation to the classic vampire creature, thanks to one of their popular episodes. It’s amazing to consider how far this program has progressed throughout the years.

Knowing they genuinely care for one another off-screen, this fact will remain etched in my memory as an ardent SpongeBob fan throughout my life – whether I’m young or old and gray.

As “Plankton: The Movie” hits theaters on March 7, showcasing the amusing dynamics between Karen and Plankton, why not revisit some of the top “SpongeBob” specials in the meantime to recapture that familiar warmth? It might be a perfect moment for a Bikini Bottom movie marathon.
