‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Final Season Goes Into Production (At Last)

As a devoted fan of The Handmaid’s Tale, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation as we approach the final season. The series has been an integral part of my viewing routine for years, and Elisabeth Moss’ portrayal of June has become one of my favorite characters in television history.

The final season of The Handmaid’s Tale is finally underway.

On Friday, Hulu posted a picture featuring Elisabeth Moss, the main star, holding a sign from the initial day of filming for the show’s sixth and final season. The sign indicates that filming started on September 3, and interestingly, it shows that Moss is directing the first episode herself. Previously, she had directed six episodes during seasons four and five.

The Disney-controlled streaming platform announced that season six of “The Handmaid’s Tale” will air in spring 2025, marking a nearly two and a half year break between the end of season five, which premiered on November 9, 2022, and the start of the final season. Originally slated to resume production in fall 2023, filming for the show was delayed due to ongoing negotiations between writers and actors over improved contracts with media companies. Additional scheduling factors also pushed back the release date.

Season five concluded with a suspenseful finale as June (Moss) and other escapees from the oppressive nation of Gilead were attempting to leave Toronto, aiming to find a secure exit route to Hawaii, which in this series’ universe is still part of a significantly reduced United States.

Bruce Miller, the showrunner, reassured The Hollywood Reporter following that episode that there’s no need for excessive concern about June’s safety: “The very existence of our series hinges on June’s survival,” Miller stated. “In our fictional world, it’s only because she documented her journey that we have a record of the show. Therefore, she must survive, as it’s essentially what brought this production into being.

Miller will continue as an executive producer for the last season, but he relinquished his role as showrunner in 2023 to concentrate on another Hulu series titled “The Testaments“, which, like “The Handmaid’s Tale”, is derived from a novel by Margaret Atwood. The final season will be led by writers and executive producers Eric Tuchman and Yahlin Chang instead.

Additionally, in the final season, you’ll find Yvonne Strahovski, Bradley Whitford, Max Minghella, Ann Dowd, O.T. Fagbenle, Samira Wiley, Madeline Brewer, Amanda Brugel, Sam Jaeger, Ever Carradine, and Josh Charles grace the screen as well.

MGM Television is behind the production of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’. This series is executive produced by Bruce Miller alongside Warren Littlefield, Tina Tuchman, Daniel Chang, Francesca Moss, Sheila Hockin, John Weber, Frank Siracusa, Steve Stark, Kim Todd, Dan Wilson, and Fran Sears.
